The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is now investigating the possibility of paying kids in disadvantaged communities to do well in school. The idea is that kids who passed all their classes and performed the normally unexceptional feat of showing up every day for instruction would be rewarded with some extra money.
It’s a terrible suggestion even on its face: What kind of life lessons will the board be instilling if it teaches kids that doing the absolute bare minimum — basically anything short of not being completely useless — is cause for celebration and treats?

There was a chill at Mississauga city hall yesterday after a harshly worded memo by Coun. Carolyn Parrish was made public, in which she describes Mayor Hazel McCallion as “ungrateful, ungracious and downright rude.”

Parrish’s memo, sent to McCallion and copied to the rest of council last week, came after allegedly critical comments the mayor made regarding federal-provincial infrastructure funding at an event attended by the prime minister and the premier.

McCallion reportedly described the money going to a local project as a “drop in the bucket,” saying the funding doesn’t come close to addressing the needs of municipalities.

A furious Parrish wrote: “Typical of dozens of senior politicians who have been at the sharp end of your tongue in the past, and hoping to allay the always expected verbal onslaught, Mr. McGuinty began with flattery, calling you ‘the most powerful politician in Canada.’

“Instead of responding with the grace and dignity benefitting an experienced and senior politician, you appeared ungrateful, ungracious and downright rude,” she wrote.

The memo ends with Parrish telling McCallion she no longer controls council and does not speak for “most of this council.”

During a council meeting break yesterday, McCallion called the criticism a “misunderstanding” of what she had told reporters. She said it was one of the most harshly worded memos she had received as mayor.

Today's storyline: It'll be surprising and/or fascinating if the government survives the week, because the Liberals promised to bring it down at the first opportunity, and because it'll mean one or both of the NDP and Bloc supported the government.

Problems with the storyline:

• Michael Ignatieff never said he'd bring down the government at the first opportunity, only that he'd table a non-confidence motion at the first opportunity — which isn't this week.
  
• Gilles Duceppe said 11 days ago that he'd support the government if the matter at hand was simply the home renovation tax credit. 11 days ago, people! Yet today it's being reported like it's new news.
• What on earth is so interesting and/or fascinating about the NDP playing ball with the government when an election is clearly not in its best interests right now? As John Ivison said 13 days ago, "turkeys don't vote for Christmas."

Posted 8/27/2009 12:00:00 PM As a resident of St. Paul's riding I'm stuck in a provincial by-election campaign and I've already had two seniors at the door from Elections Ontario. I talked to them in halting language through a crack in the door as though I was dismembering a corpse in my living room. Hey, it was a Sunday afternoon and I was bored. Probably gave them something to talk about at their United Church campaign to repatriate Omar Khadr the next day.

I've also had a door tag from the Liberal candidate and the NDP has called twice. We're only a week into the mini-campaign and the Conservatives haven't contacted me yet.

In the middle of this wonderful example of democracy I have to deal with the latest news out of Ottawa, where the folks in the Harper government have once again tossed everything they've stood for over the side for political expediency.... [ READ MORE ]

Despite what I have written or said in the past, I firmly believe Stephen Harper is the greatest, most magnificent, most brilliant Prime Minister in the history of the universe.

And I look forward to one day serving the Great Leader with unthinking, blind obedience and with complete loyalty.

(There, if that doesn't get me a Senate appointment, I don't know what will.)

After a close round of voting, we have our top 10, in the quest to find Canada's silliest scandal.

10. Sexgate: Alberta Premier John Brownlee goes down in defeat over a Berlusconi-esque sex scandal, with his UFA party completely wiped out - one of 3 government changes in the province's history. Only problem is, most historians have concluded the charges were mostly bogus.

9. Startovergate: A reported asks Stephane Dion a poorly worded question with mangled verb tenses. Dion asks for clarification. This showed he was not a leader.
