Now that NDP Leader Jack Layton-Bouchard has drank the “Nous sommes Quebecois” Kool-Aid so loved by the separatists in his caucus — and, please, let’s not call them Quebec “nationalists” — it will not be long before an ugly bill revisits the House of Commons.

For the third time in a month, Michael Ignatieff has taken a shot at my leadership.
Last week in a Liberal video he knocked my many years of service to the Canadian people.
While Michael Ignatieff spent 34 years outside of our country, I was rolling up my sleeves as a city councillor to get things done for people - building green initiatives in Toronto, overseeing one of Canada's largest public hydro companies, presiding over the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

I am incredibly proud of my record. Of the things you and I have accomplished together.
It's this record of Canadian leadership that I will take to voters as I ask them to join with me to defeat this out-of-touch Conservative government.
TAKING ON STEPHEN HARPER.
A few weeks ago, Michael Ignatieff responded to Stephen Harper's divisive approach on guns by targeting six NDP MPs who consistently supported the gun registry.
And not a single Conservative MP who actually opposed it.
A lot of people have asked me, with the Liberals turning their focus solely towards us, whether I will point the NDP's election resources solely towards Michael Ignatieff's team.
No. I absolutely won't.
The focus of New Democrats across the country remains the same. To defeat Stephen Harper's out-of-touch government. And to replace it with New Democrat leadership that cares about the challenges that middle-class families face right now.
I know that after four and a half years under the Conservatives, Canadians are looking for a different kind of leadership. And only New Democrats are stepping up to the plate.
You see, in two and a half years as Liberal leader, Michael Ignatieff has voted in favour of every single Stephen Harper budget.
Under his leadership, the Liberals have consistently voted to adopt Mr. Harper's tax breaks for profitable banks and big polluters. The same corporate giveaways that Mr. Ignatieff now pretends to oppose.
Michael Ignatieff even voted for the Harper HST that has caused the price of everyday essentials to skyrocket in B.C. and Ontario.
And he hasn't delivered a single thing for Canadians in return.
Michael Ignatieff has backed Stephen Harper throughout his entire political career. That is his record of public service. And that is why the only path left for him seems to be attacking New Democrats.
DEFEATING CONSERVATIVES IN THE NEXT ELECTION.

Jack Layton used to boast about being a socialist. “I’m proud to call myself a socialist. I prefer it by far to democratic socialist,” he said in an interview seven years ago.
Yet when I posed the same question yesterday, he was less strident. “I’m not into labels, but I prefer the description ‘social democrat’. I am the leader of Canada’s social democratic party and proud of it,” he said.
He sounded like former British Labour leader, Tony Blair, who also preferred the “social democrat” tag.

It was all about tax hikes and cover-ups today in the Question Period - a depressing mix of issues that makes one wonder how Parliament will actually continue to work into the new year.
Oh, and for a brief shining moment Jack Layton was the Leader of the Official Opposition.
While the Liberals took on the Conservatives for increasing employment-insurance premiums and the jobs killed as a result, Mr. Layton accused the government of trying to shut down the Military Police Complaints Commission hearings into the alleged torture of Afghan prisoners.
“The government is not serious about allowing this inquiry to continue,” the NDP Leader charged, saying the evidence of two witnesses was being suppressed. “What does the government know about what was going on in the Afghan prisons that it doesn’t want to be presented to the commission?”
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the government is co-operating and respecting the investigative process.
The inquiry is looking at what military police in Kandahar knew about the possible abuse of prisoners who had been handed over by Canadian soldiers to Afghanistan’s notorious intelligence service. Public hearings were adjourned today to give lawyers a chance to figure out the precise scope of the probe.
Mr. Layton pressed on, raising testimony provided by Richard Colvin, a former diplomat who worked at Canada's provincial reconstruction base in Kandahar in 2006, whose evidence the NDP Leader accused the government of "trying to suppress."

The annual Muslim holiday of Eid has come and gone, and once more the community has been showered with messages from politicians tripping over one other to prove their credentials as lovers of Islam and all things Muslim.
I have an offer to make to all these men and women who stumble and mumble to utter “Salaam Alaikum” messages written by their Muslim staffers: If you are so enamoured by my faith and impressed by the conduct of my community, then stop these annual shenanigans and once and for all come join our ranks. Convert to Islam.
Perhaps, some have already taken the plunge.
Take for example this year’s Eid message by Jack Layton. Addressing us Muslims as “Dear brothers and sisters” the NDP leader preaches the end of Ramadan “is an opportunity to renew the spirit and faith in Islam.”

I think the Liberal Party is playing mind games, probably taking aim at NDP leader Jack Layton. The idea is to make Jack Layton think the NDP could fare well in an election against the Liberals right now.
