Leftists Bring Out Their Gobell Primer...

Anti-Mayor Ford agenda is clear

Del Grande: “If you cannot derail the message, derail the messenger.” That is the essence of the continuing harassment of Mayor Rob Ford by certain journalists and media outlets in this city. Look at what transpired last week. The CBC’s Mary Walsh, dressed up as a so-called “Warrior Princess,” showed up unannounced on the driveway of Mayor Ford’s home early Monday morning to harass...

Don't Hold Your Breath...

National Post editorial board: NDP should give Gaza boat supporters the boot

The folks organizing the “Canadian Boat to Gaza” style themselves as humanitarians. In fact, they are radical anti-Israeli activists who have co-opted the language of humanitarianism to further their single-minded campaign against the Jewish state. We know this because these same folks have no interest in sending a “Boat to Syria,” where more than 1,000 protesters have been slaughtered in recent weeks. Nor are they interested in sending boats to Libya or Yemen. Just Israel, where the humanitarian toll has been much lighter. Thankfully, most mainstream Canadian politicians — including, apparently, NDP leader, Jack Layton — recognize such hateful anti-Israel attitudes for what they are.

The Boat to Gaza activists are participating in a boat convoy that will challenge Israel’s blockade of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip. Their stated goal is to bring humanitarian aid and “carry exports out of Gaza.” Donors already can send aid to Gaza through both Israel and Egypt, of course. But such transfers are subject to inspections meant to ensure that Hamas does not import armaments and explosives for slaughtering Jews. By seeking to undermine such security measures with their convoy, the Boat to Gaza activists are in effect allying themselves with Hamas terrorists. And no one should be surprised if the Israeli military deals with them in that spirit, even if it means risking a repeat of the lethal episode that unfolded under similar circumstances last year. Makes You Wonder If The Nickname Taliban Jack Is Justified?

Thomas Mulcair would not be the NDP’s first rabbit-hole burrower

It’s hard to know what to make of Thomas Mulcair’s odd comments about the existence or non-existence of Osama bin Laden photos. At best, he just seems confused. At worst, he seems to be giving voice to some kind of conspiracy theory. If the latter, he is not the first NDP MP to get sucked toward this rabbit hole: In 2008, NDP MP Libby Davies stood up in Parliament and read out this petition, which had been signed by over 500 citizens:
Scientific and eyewitness evidence shows that the 9/11 Commission Report is a fraudulent document and that elements within the US government were complicit in the murder of thousands of people on 9/11/2001. This event, the petition points out, brought Canada into the so-called “War on Terror,” [and] it has changed our domestic and foreign policies for the worse.

Isn't This The Truth....

The Year in Ideas: The death of humour
The year has been notable for the amount of offence that was taken at so little. In Canada especially, where hurt feelings are now specifically compensated in human rights law, taking offence looks like a growth industry

Next on Michael Layton’s agenda: Restore Pluto’s honour, condemn bubonic plague

Rookie Toronto councillor Mike Layton, son of federal NDP leader Jack Layton and stepson of NDP MP Olivia Chow, objects to a recent Macleans article that asked if Canadian universities are “too Asian.” Mr. Layton put a motion before council calling on Macleans to apologize because the article was “offensive to me personally.” The National Post was able to obtain Mr. Layton’s secret list other personal annoyances he feels it is the city’s duty to address (at someone else’s expense — these are the Laytons remember).

The Phil Kessel Trade: Phil has been a disappointment. He’s been here what, a whole year? — and no cup yet. And he’s, like, a minus nine. This team needs to rebuild from the ground up, and you can’t do that without draft picks. That’s why I’m proposing Toronto City Council form the Stanley Cup Victory Advisory Group, which will bring together government bureaucrats and amateur hockey fans on council, under my leadership, to review any/all Leaf trades and acquisitions. Another Broken Promise...

Ontario housing strategy: Won’t reduce long wait lists
Tue Nov 30 2010

Claiming it needed “the time to get it right,” the Liberal government at Queen’s Park long delayed releasing a long-term affordable housing strategy. That’s what makes what was released Monday – three years after it was first promised in the 2007 election campaign – all the more disappointing.

Take Newfie Humour Out Of Our Culture And We Fail To Have Any Unique Culture

Canada: talking like a normal person gets you fired

Even in Newfoundland:

In an interview, Ms. Pardy Ghent said her comment was a tongue-in-cheek response to an ongoing political furor over revelations that an opposition Liberal staffer had sent Mr. Williams’ communications director an e-mail asking whether the premier had mental illness or syphilis.

Instead of eliciting a laugh, Ms. Pardy Ghent got a call from a deputy minister earlier this month, telling her she was being let go from the Burin Peninsula Regional Council, a government advisory board she helped found in 2005.

That prompted the board’s chairman, Michael Graham, to issue a letter demanding she be reinstated, essentially arguing that making off-colour jokes is part of the province’s unique character.

(...)

Geoff Meeker, whose political blog appears on the website of the St. John’s Telegram, said this incident is part of a more worrying trend in the province, where people who call in to talk radio shows to air their complaints about the government end up getting calls from ministers or their deputies chastising them for their comments.

Question:

Was the "Liberal staffer" whose bizarre email sparked this incident fired, too?

Universities And Freedom Of Expression...

...the Ultimate Oxymoron. Universities have allowed groups to hijack the administration and taken to the extreme the adage that shouting fire in a crowd is not allowed in their version of freedom of expression.

Chris Selley’s Full Pundit: Free speech is where it’s at

Universal derision

In which various university presidents make their lives far more difficult than they need to be.
In the National Post, David Frum compares York University’s reception of right-wing academic Daniel Pipes (a briefing on hate speech, and an eventually cancelled appearance) to its reception of socialist former British MP George Galloway (a non-cancelled speech conducted under police protection paid for by students, with threats of legal action against protesters), and concludes there’s something rather wrong with this picture.

No kidding. Setting aside the fact the situations aren’t precisely analogous, and all the various allegations against Mr. Pipes and Mr. Galloway levelled by their ideological opponents, what we really don’t get is this: What kind of self-respecting university president wouldn’t bend over backwards, even if it costs him a few bucks, to ensure he presides over a bastion of absolute (or as absolute as possible) free speech? As Sun Media’s Ezra Levant says, they’re supposed to be in charge of educating young people. What the hell kind of message are they sending? (Mind you, as someone who applauded Mr. Galloway initially being kept out of Canada because he doesn’t like him — and because there was, technically speaking, a legal justification for doing so — Levant isn’t exactly dripping with credibility on this subject.)

Thank Gawd There Are Some Cracks In Leftwing Version Of Freedom Of Expression...

Paul Russell: Readers love Blatchford, Beck, naughty statues and bread pudding

When four excerpts from Christie Blatchford’s book about Caledonia graced our pages this week — the first one coming the same day as a front-page story about the author being barred from speaking at the University of Waterloo due to student protests — readers flooded our mailbox with notes of support.

“Christie Blatchford should be happy Dan Kellar and his band of goons interrupted her speech,” wrote Tim Lemieux. “What would have been a presentation to a small audience has now become national news, and has helped bring even more attention to her excellent new book, Helpless. Thanks, Dan.”

“Dan Kellar’s self-chained protest at the University of Waterloo focused my attention on the excerpt about the suspension of Canadian law in Caledonia, Ont.,” added Judy Turner. “Ms. Blatchford’s recounting of this episode shows how easily the special status received by today’s savvy natives (and sometimes others) can be used to manipulate our politicians, our laws and freedom of speech.”

– More than two dozen letter writers lined up to slap the proverbial wrist of columnist Jonathan Kay this week, after he dared criticize conservative commentator Glenn Beck in his column last Saturday, “The George Soros effect.”

'Letter of Complaint re: Ms Christie Blatchford's Cancelled Speech Last Friday'

Mohammed Shouman, VP, Management Sciences Student Association

'The Left's Campaign Against Christie Blatchford'

An excellent round up here.

More here.

Once again, I'm disappointed with Blatchford for not taking the stage, regardless.

UPDATE: Mark Steyn writes... Re my recent appearance in London, Ontario, I wrote that "'security concerns' are the new black(out)" .

The latest victim is my old pal, the great Christie Blatchford. Blatch is nobody's idea of a "right-winger" or "racist" -- indeed, she's so respectable she has a Globe & Mail contract and a Governor-General's Literary Award, neither of which I'm in danger of any time soon.

Nevertheless she was prevented from speaking by thugs at the University of Waterloo, and, as is now traditional, those responsible for "security" declined to provide any.
Just before I went on stage at the London event, my publicist whispered to me that she was impressed by the security team. "Whatever," I said. "But I reserve the right to beat up any disrupters myself."

If you've ever got into an argument with Christie, you'll know she should have done the same. If Christie Blatchford can't speak at a publicly-funded Canadian university, taxpayers should withhold every dime that goes to fund these totalitarian sinkholes.

Where Is The Mainstream Media Reports...

What's The Opposite Of "Diversity"?

University.

[University of Waterloo*] is the latest school to fall victim to these self-proclaimed activists. Christie Blatchford was set to give a talk to a small but enthusiastic crowd of people about her new book, Helpless: Caledonia’s Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All of Us.

Some of the usual suspects decided that Blatchford and her audience were – you guessed it – filthy racists who don’t deserve to have an event.

I say we invade these institutions, fire the administrators and convert them to user pay.
