...we do follow the trends, although there is vocal opposition to one of our schools being used as a Mosque, so what is a another "special needs" school although in the past they were meant to assist children with physical and/or learning problems.

Green also says that such a ban would run contrary to the conventions of "tolerant and mutually respectful society." Clearly, he knows nothing of Islamic law and its knack for doing just that. And for that matter, how does concealing one's face in public foster a mutually respectful society? It is a mark of separation and distrust, and of non-engagement with "the other," to borrow a well-worn multiculturalist term.
But, of course, one must remember that multicultural "tolerance" is a one-way street on which Western values must yield the right-of-way to galloping Sharia.

Damian Green said such a move would be "rather un-British" and run contrary to the conventions of a "tolerant and mutually respectful society".

He said it would be "undesirable" for Parliament to vote on a burka ban in Britain and that there was no prospect of the Coalition proposing it.

His comments will dismay the growing number of supporters of a ban. A YouGov survey last week found that 67 per cent of voters wanted the wearing of full-face veils to be made illegal.

Mr Green used a wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Telegraph, his first since taking up his post at the Home Office in May, to issue a "message around the world that Britain is no longer a soft touch on immigration".

He said the summer would see a major crackdown on the main streams of illegal immigration -- including sham marriages, illegal workers and people trafficking -- and confirmed that this autumn the Government would set an overall cap on migrants entering Britain from outside the European Union.

His firm decision to rule out a burka ban will disappoint some Right-of-centre Tory MPs, including Philip Hollobone, who has tabled a private member's bill that would make it illegal for anyone to cover their face in public....

She is a beautiful and vividly articulate 18-year-old who lives somewhere in Toronto. She ran away from home three years ago because she was afraid of her abusive father, who used to hit her and her sisters repeatedly. “I knew it was hard for my dad to change,” she says. He is used to the way things work in Pakistan, where they lived till she was 10. She has a close friend who also fears her father. He has beaten her viciously, and has threatened many times to kill her.

Two and a half years ago, another Toronto-area teenager named Aqsa Parvez was strangled after her father allegedly threatened to kill her for ignoring his wishes. Her father and brother have been charged with her murder. When the second girl discussed this tragedy with her father, he told her, “You kind of girls and girls like her deserve whatever happened to her. ”

An attack in which a Brampton lawyer was stabbed using a Sikh ceremonial dagger is raising fears about renewed objections to the right to wear the religious symbol. The kirpan is banned in Denmark and France, but is allowed in most public places in Canada, including at schools.

For eighty years, the media represented the Sons of Freedom, a radical group of Russian Doukhobors, through stories of nude demonstrations, children kidnapped by the RCMP, the torching of schools and other buildings, and the bombing of railways and bridges. These events created consternation for governments, orthodox Doukhobors, their neighbours and the general public - until the mid-1980s, when an accord was negotiated between the Doukhobors and government. "Negotiating Buck Naked" examines how the accord was reached, why it worked when numerous other interventions failed, and how it changed the patterns of conflict between the factions. What enabled the violence to end? How was the accord reached, and what factors enabled it to succeed? What lessons can be learned from this experience? To answer these questions, Cran develops a theoretical framework for understanding the process of dispute resolution, emphasizing that competing discourses are juxtaposed and that these different but equally valid narratives must be negotiated. Using this approach, Cran extracts from the Doukhobor conflict valuable lessons for understanding the nature of both terrorism and hegemonic practices, and traces how we view conflict and intervention from a Western perspective.
