Today: Expectations are running impossibly high for Barack Obama’s first official trip to the Middle East as U.S. President. His itinerary includes meetings with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and President Hosni Mubarak, of Egypt, but its centrepiece is his promised address to the Muslim world — he is scheduled to speak at Cairo University on Thursday.

On the eve of the long-awaited speech, Arabs and Muslims have a long wish list, from bringing peace to the region to fixing problems with visas. Commentators in Arab newspapers recognize there is no way Mr. Obama can satisfy all these demands, but give him kudos for trying anyway. Ordinary Arabs are not so understanding.

In Cairo, Al Ahram interviewed Anwar, a skeptical cabdriver, who asked, “What message and what speech? And what will we do with his words when Iraqis are being killed and when Israelis are killing Palestinians?” Arabs should expect nothing from Mr. Obama or from anyone,
