We Can Handle Anything The Critics Throw....
An attack on Stephen Harper, or just clever continuous journalism?
Yeah, I'll catch flak from conservatives on this one, but I just don't see what's wrong with the Harperdex.

The Liberal Con And The Actual Facts
Colby Cosh: A (superficial) study in smoking
Posted: March 06, 2009, 7:23 AM by NP Editor
The Ontario government announced on Wednesday that it will introduce legislation allowing it to recover past and ongoing health care costs borne by Ontario taxpayers due to tobacco-related illness. Without reading another sentence, you all know that this effort will be accompanied by a corporal’s guard of the most wretched inventions and exaggerations. The news release announcing the initiative featured a quote from Health Minister David Caplan: “At over $1.6-billion annually, Ontario’s tobacco-related health care costs affect all Ontarians.” Did a little voice in your head just chirp that increasingly popular stock phrase from Wikipedia: citation needed?
The backgrounder attached to the presser repeats the $1.6-billion claim, and does provide a source: a study called The Costs of Substance Abuse in Canada 2002. 2002? All right, well ignore the fact that this number hasn’t been properly spruced up in a while. But one cracks open the study itself, only to immediately find that it contains some surprising language:
“The study we are describing here is a cost-of-illness study presenting aggregate costs, which are calculated by looking at all the external costs of substance abuse and comparing them with a hypothetical situation where no substance abuse exists. Another kind of cost estimate is the avoidable cost, which makes an important distinction between all costs generated by substance abuse and the portion of those costs that could be avoided by establishing appropriate policies and programs. The current study provides an essential foundation for other types of cost estimates such as avoidable costs and therefore makes a valuable contribution to policy making and health care planning in Canada. However, it does not measure the impact of substance abuse on government expenditures and revenues.”

It Is Going To Be A Couple Of Interesting Months For Political Junkies
OTTAWA—
Stupid is not an adjective normally attached to a Prime Minister respected for brains as well as elbows. So Harper knows as well as Ignatieff that the menace now stalking the government isn't a fissured coalition or the new leader of a weak party pretending to be strong. It's the economy, genius.
Shrewd as he sometimes is, the Prime Minister got that horribly wrong in a fiscal update that provoked a crisis by attacking foes while not laying a glove on recession. Having come so close to losing a 7-week-old government, a miscalculation eclipsing even Joe Clark's 1979 defeat, Harper isn't about to repeat the mistake.

Resistance Is Futile
Like it or not, big-box chains are migrating downtown. Instead of mounting protests, urbanites should embrace the monster-retail movement.

Your Daily Harper Minute
Time to pull the plug
My, my. Some Liberals seem to be getting a mite testy lately… Western Grit calls Conservatives "…arrogant, pompous in-breeders…" And that’s just for starters. Well, if you can’t win by logic, try name-calling. It’s the standard Liberal strategy. Tom Flanagan paints a grim picture about Liberal finances. You know, if the Liberals are having trouble

- Don Martin: Harper's 'dysfunctional' record outshines 10 years of functional Chretien
-
After deciding the House of Commons was too unstable to recall and cancelling a leaders’ summit due to scheduling difficulties, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s only justification for his saber-rattling rush to an election has become a dysfunctional Parliament.
Well, hogwash.
Sure, the atmosphere has been poisoned by MPs so sick of each other they’ve retreated inside their own party’s cocoon, refusing to play nice with outsiders.
But as Mr. Harper himself noted only nine months ago, this minority parliament works damn well.

I Haven't Had Time To Commit The Old Sins.....
Media botches Vatican "sin" story
"A supposed list of 'new sins' from the Vatican, such as pollution and genetic manipulation, made headlines across the world on Monday. The list actually didn’t come from any official Catholic Church document, but from an interview of a bishop that was published in L'Osservatore Romano, the 'semi-official' newspaper in Vatican City, and it exposed the mainstream media’s fundamental misunderstanding of Christianity in general, and the Catholic Church specifically.
(...)
"Archbishop Girotti said that the modern world does not understand the nature of sin. With their coverage of the interview, the mass media unintentionally underlined the prelate's point."

Thank Gawd For Huck's Safe Return
TheStar.com - GTA - Dog-napped Lab returned home safely
Staff Reporter
Huckleberry, the victim of a weekend dog-napping, has been returned safe and sound.
“Thank God he’s okay,” said owner Bert Clark. “I haven’t slept in two days. I’m a wreck.”
The chocolate Labrador was returned home late Sunday after police received a tip from the alleged doggy-nappers. Clark didn’t reveal whether or not he issued the $15,000 reward he promised, saying that the ordeal has left him too exhausted to comment.
“He’s healthy, he’s safe, and he’s happy to see me,” Clark said.
The dog was reported missing on Saturday morning after he disappeared outside a Yonge St. and Roxborough St. bakery.
Clark immediately offered $15,000 as a reward for the safe return of his dog.
"There isn't any sum of money that I would associate with him," Clark said last night during a break from searching for his pet. "Life isn't about money – it's about the connection you make with other souls. Huckleberry was like my soulmate."
Huckleberry went missing while he was in the care of a dog walker, Clark said. She left the pooch tied up outside a bakery at Roxborough andYonge Sts., and came out several minutes later to find him gone.

It Is Refreshing To See Objectivity In Blogging
Ooopsie
Christ these people make me sick. Here’s a question – why aren’t all schoolchildren taught that there are special mental health risks associated with rightwing family values? I think that would better prepare them for life.
.......and I agree but it would certainly help if he was to detail what are these "special mental health risks" and would they not apply to leftwing family values as well. I was taught specifically when it came to sexual contact that if I wasn't careful I could contact syphllis, gonnarrea, and a multitude of other infection diseases, unwanted pregnancy. It would certainly be enlightening to know how leftwing family values deal with these situations.

I Can Only Hope That Some Of My Critics Will Also See The Light

The Gipper
I leave you this fine evening with a column by Pat Buchanan. A quarter of a century ago, and as late as five years ago, I viewed Pat as the antichrist. I now agree with him about almost everything. Has he changed? Nope; he’s been right from the beginning.
