OTTAWA—
Stupid is not an adjective normally attached to a Prime Minister respected for brains as well as elbows. So Harper knows as well as Ignatieff that the menace now stalking the government isn't a fissured coalition or the new leader of a weak party pretending to be strong. It's the economy, genius.
Shrewd as he sometimes is, the Prime Minister got that horribly wrong in a fiscal update that provoked a crisis by attacking foes while not laying a glove on recession. Having come so close to losing a 7-week-old government, a miscalculation eclipsing even Joe Clark's 1979 defeat, Harper isn't about to repeat the mistake.
