I’m sorry, I’m not trying to be rude but I felt compelled to respond to this.
At the 2006 Montreal Convention the Liberal party membership voted against a one-member one-vote system for our party’s constitution. The grassroots membership expressed its clear intent. If members disagree with this they can certainly make use of the democratic process within the party to try the proposal again at the next convention. However, I find it disheartening amidst a national constitutional crisis that Liberal members are talking about disregarding our own party constitution and I sincerely regret that principles like “democracy” and “grassroots involvement” are being used to sling mud at our party institution and overthrow a recent vote on our constitution.
The discussion of “77 people” choosing the next leader is misleading. The executive is responsible for consulting with caucus to choose an interim leader for Dion’s replacement until the next convention. These people were voted into their current positions, with the attached responsibilities, by Liberals. We have democracy in the Liberal party but we can no more legitimately abandon our process than Harper can choose to govern without majority support in the legislature.
