This Will Be Seen As Justice...

Omar Khadr to serve 8 years; jury recommended 40

A jury has decided that Canadian-born Omar Khadr should serve 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to war-crimes charges, but a plea deal will ensure he serves no more than eight years.

Don’t welcome back Khadr

Lorne Gunter: How to catch a thief in Toronto

There are so many things wrong in the case of David Chen, it's hard to know where to begin. Mr. Chen is the Toronto grocer who back in May performed a citizen's arrest on a serial thief, but now faces charges of assault, kidnapping and forcible confinement for his actions. Let's start, though, with the aspect of this case that grinds my nerves the most: Crown prosecutors made a plea bargain with Anthony Bennett, the thief, in return for his testimony against Mr. Chen.

Crown prosecutors always signal who they want most by making deals with the other accused in a case for their testimony against the most-desired target. Mr. Bennett, who has a criminal record for drugs and theft going back 33 years, got a lighter sentence (30 days, plus 15 days time served) in return for acting as a government witness against Mr. Chen. Prosecutors cannot see the distortion of justice inherent in letting go a habitual criminal -- a man who for years has harassed and stolen from shopkeepers in Mr. Chen's Toronto neighbourhood -- just so they can win a conviction against a law-abiding citizen who grew tired of police and court inaction and decided to exercise his ancient rights to self-defence and citizen's arrest.

From SDA......

Standing Up

In a piece published today in American Thinker entitled "Comedy, Bullies and American Politics," Rosslyn Smith writes about the media entertainment industry's ongoing portrayal of the Democrat/left as informed and just, and the Republicans -- and their family members -- as ridicule-worthy:

The entertainment industry has been bullying Republicans for most of my adult life and I am 56. It started with stereotypes in movies and TV shows. The small town prude, the uncultured suburban hypocrite, the greedy capitalist, the perverted man of God, the southern white bigot. By the 1980s among the self described elite, the very name of Ronald Reagan was treated like the punch line to an inside joke, the way to get a laugh those rubes who supported him could never even begin to understand.

(Along the same lines as what Smith describes, British comedian Alexei Sayle, a member of the Marxist-Leninist faction of Communist Party of Britain, no less, lamented back in the Thatcher era that the lamest comedians extant could get laughs by simply saying "How about that Margaret Thatcher, eh?")

By the 1990s the assault began in earnest....While Republican men would routinely be portrayed as slow-witted slugs, the worst vitriol was reserved for Republican women and minorities, those who refused to adopt the mantle of victim and the spoils of affirmative action.
...It became a firestorm of rage with the nomination of Sarah Palin, an effective administrator who governed from the libertarian side of the party while following social conservative principles in her personal life, and thus would appeal to many voters. But attacking Palin wasn't good enough. The attack was carried to her children.

Smith sees the grassroots view in this blog comment: "The anger over this is....more than just about Sarah Palin. It's about years of being told we are intolerant and intolerable when we are not, and having to eat anything an everything an elitist liberal media culture throws our way," but she sees a lack of desire among urban Republicans and party insiders to stand up to the assaults and believes this reluctance has consequences:

....By letting the bullies dominate the cultural debate, Republicans have allowed the worst of the stereotypes to rule in the minds of those economically upscale members of urban and suburban America who are mostly passive users of political information....

She concludes,

No matter which way I look at it, while turning the other cheek in the face of the relentless media entertainment industry bully may be good for one's soul, it has turned out to be a terrible way to build a political party.

The whole thing is definitely worth reading, and is relevant in a Canadian context as well.

National Post editorial board: The UN's double standard on Israel and Sri Lanka

If more proof were needed that the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) is a feckless, biased, intellectually corrupt haven for dictators and Islamofascists, the evidence was clearly on display this week. The UNHRC voted to affirm Sri Lanka’s right to self-defence from terror attacks launched against its citizens and territory by the Tamil Tigers. Indeed, the council went further, “condemning all attacks that the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) launched on the civilian population and its practice of using civilians as human shields.” Sri Lanka had every right to protect itself, the council concluded, even at the cost of an estimated 20,000 civilian Tamil lives since the beginning of May alone.

Why, then, when Israel seeks to do the same — protect its citizens and territory from rocket and terror attacks launched from Gaza — does the very same council accuse Israel of being a “genocidal empire?” No quarter is given for the way Hamas — every bit as much a terror organization as the LTTE — hides its rocket bases and ammunition caches in schools, apartments and hospitals and launches its attacks on Israel from behind innocent human targets so that if the Israel Defense Forces wish to retaliate it is impossible for them to do so without taking civilian lives.
