OH CANADA but not in East York

Parade Holly Macnamara couldn’t believe the news: The East York Canada Day parade has been cancelled because of the city workers’ strike. Now she and her family are left scrambling to find something else to do.

“I feel lost,” said Macnamara, a 33-year-old teacher on maternity leave. “I feel like I’m not going to be able to celebrate Canada Day the way it’s supposed to be celebrated.”
She thinks she will have a barbecue with family and friends and then maybe go to a local park to set off fireworks. But it just won’t be the same. The parade and the daylong celebration bond not only Macnamara’s family but also the entire community.

The East York parade, run by volunteers, has been a tradition for 53 years, said organizer Don Duvall. It usually has about 1,500 participants, attracts between 55,000 and 80,000 spectators and launches a day of celebration that includes amusement rides, bingo and fireworks at Stan Wadlow Park.

Last word: In the final analysis this blog is a relief valve for my rants/raves.
