Hey, has anyone else heard this one before?

Anti-smoking groups are urging the government to move forward with a plan to introduce larger and more graphic warning labels on cigarette packages.

That’s right. Not place graphic labels on, but to make them bigger and grosser. Because the only thing standing between us and a smoke-free world is reaching out to the last handful of idiots who have somehow never heard that smoking is bad and inform them that inhaling chemicals and carcinogens is, gasp!, unhealthy.

Simon Wookey: The only candidate rejecting Queers Against Israeli Apartheid’s message

Across the country, and very much here in Toronto, the issue of trust is driving our political environment. Voters — tired of hyper-partisan gamesmanship, lost and broken promises, disappearing clouds of public funds, and endless empty rhetoric — simply seek transparent representation. Pierre Trudeau died 10 years ago this week, so of course the tributes and legacy analyses have been coming thick and fast. Among my favourites was offered up by Chantel Hebert, one of the few people worth reading at the Toronto Star.

Well, I have one, too. But unlike most commentators, I come to bury Trudeau (or at least make sure he’s still buried), not to praise him.
While he certainly had a profound impact on Canada, it was mostly destructive. Even the few positive changes he made might be called inevitable; they were the type of changes that were coming to every western society by dint of cultural evolution anyway. Read More »

...from driving on the Highway Of Heros!

National Post editorial board: Making Canada a haven for deserters

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has thrown his support behind a private member’s bill from Liberal MP Gerard Kennedy. The bill, slated for a second-reading vote on Wednesday, would permit U.S. soldiers opposed to the war in Iraq to seek refuge in Canada from their sworn duty in the United States armed forces.

To say the least, Mr. Ignatieff’s support is hypocritical. He was one of the world’s leading academic supporters for the American invasion in 2002. In his 2004 book The Lesser Evil: Political Ethics in an Age of Terror, he not only justified such pre-emptive wars against rogue states, but also condoned coercive forms of interrogation that many Liberals believe are really torture. How does he square those earlier positions with his current support for giving shelter to soldiers who are running away from fighting the war on terror?

Mr. Kennedy’s bill, if left unamended, would make Canada a haven not only for American deserters, but deserters from around the world. Any soldier, whether from a country’s regular army or a ragtag militia, who objected to the fight he was being sent into, could escape to Canada and stay here permanently, so long as the battle he was fleeing was unapproved by the United Nations.

According to the United Nations, there are currently 27 active wars or conflicts around the world. Almost none have UN approval. Indeed only one – the war in Afghanistan – has anything approaching Security Council sanction. And there are those who argue the Afghan mission has changed so drastically that even it no longer qualifies as UN-endorsed.

Would Mr. Ignatieff welcome an American GI who objected to being part of the surge in Afghanistan? Canadian soldiers who similarly shirked their duties there would be subject to arrest. The passage of Mr. Kennedy’s bill might well establish a situation in which immigration officials were required to give more protection to American deserters than our own conscientious objectors would have.

We suspect both Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Ignatieff would insist the former’s private member’s bill would never sanction such amnesty for Americans being sent to Afghanistan. Still, it’s not hard to imagine American deserters showing up at our border, claiming the Afghan campaign is immoral and insisting we take them in. Many of the same crusading lawyers representing the approximately 40 Iraq-war deserters already here would no doubt be only too happy to use Mr. Kennedy’s law, if passed, to advocate for similar rights for future Afghan-war deserters.

It is also worth noting that America officially ended combat operations in Iraq on August 31. Would any deserters who showed up after Mr Kennedy’s bill became law qualify to use its provisions? Is his bill anything more than one more snide, symbolic gesture to reaffirm that liberals around the world hated George Bush?

The current Obama administration isn’t likely to welcome a purported ally taking this action either, since it implies current policies – not just Mr. Bush’s – warrant Americans running out on military obligations they willingly signed up for. (There is no longer a draft to dodge. Any American seeking refuge here willingly enlisted.)

Mr. Kennedy’s bill is nothing more than an attempt to keep fighting the last culture war. And Mr. Ignatieff should be ashamed for supporting it.

Possibly Israel Thnks The PRICE Is Too High...

Israel’s message to the rest of the world: We don’t want peace

As someone who generally considers himself a friend of Israel, I really am stunned by the foolish decision to re-commence settlement construction in the West Bank. I know there are plenty of people out there who’ve memorized 18 different reasons why Israel is theoretically justified in putting up new homes on the ground. But as I argued at length here, that is beside the point: Mahmoud Abbas is a legitimate peace partner, and it is simply idiotic for Israel to stubbornly insist on wrecking any chance for fruitful peace talks by willfully violating the one red-line issue that the PA President has insisted upon. And for what? To build a few hundred more houses and empower the most militant and uncompromising political settler-friendly elements within Israel?
The Gaza flotilla has gotten a lot of the press in recent months. But in that case, the Israeli government at least could legitimately argue that it was interdicting aid to Hamas, an entity that truly is at war with Israel. In the case of settlement construction, Israel is sabotaging a chance for peace, full stop. And aside from everything else, that’s a terrible message for an already beleaguered nation to the send to the world.

James: Smither-math: Spend more plus freeze taxes = savings

September 27, 2010
Royson James

George Smitherman says he will freeze your taxes, spend more on core services and still save you money, if he’s elected Toronto mayor.

The budget blueprint, released Monday, sounds like so much hocus-pocus, and on one level it is. But using a well-known formula at Toronto city hall, success may be possible. So long as the rich uncle up at Queen’s Park bankrolls the city to the tune of $100 million a year, we’re good.

Smitherman, the former deputy premier under Dalton McGuinty, and the candidate that McGuinty Liberals are supporting in the Toronto mayoralty, said Monday he has a “reasonable expectation the province will pay.”

While he suggests his relationship with provincial party friends gives him an inside edge in landing such aid, Smitherman’s strategy borrows from a well-worn budget playbook, dating back to the start of amalgamation. This only goes to show that Toronto’s money woes are easily addressed, as long as the province maintains the city’s allowance.

What exactly is Shariah and what is Shariah Finance and what are Shariah Laws ? .......... Part X

(Continuance of my research and findings on shariah finance and Canadian financial institutions aka Canadian financial traitors)

No matter what anyone tries to tell you, remember this: The introduction of Sharia Finance in our country is a sure-fire way of gaining a very strong foothold inside the economy and thus the heart of Canada. PERIOD. Shariah embeds itself like a cancer, by stealth .... and the easiest way for this evil to permeate into our society is through shariah finance.

It's very important that you read this and educate others too, not only about shariah finance but all other aspects of shariah, some of which are already here in Canada under the guise of political correctness. Go through the lists provided at the link and see for yourself how England and the EU let this menace take over their countries. Shariah started small in England , just like over here in Canada. Now, in England it is going to be next to impossible to turn the tide of islamization without a bloody all-out civil war. If you want to save Canada from a similar fate, you better educate yourself and your family and friends.... even at the risk of being ridiculed as a hatemonger or a conspiracy nut.

There are also some videos towards the bottom of the link where Robert Spencer and Wafa Sultan talk about Shariah laws. Spencer tells of how shariah laws have crept into universities across USA .... and I fear by now in many of our own universities here in Canada.

Please take the time to read through the link and send it on to others.

Records set at waterfront marathon

By IAN ROBERTSON, Toronto Sun

Last Updated: September 26, 2010 8:05pm

As Kenneth Mungara crossed the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon finish line Sunday, he clasped his hands and offered a prayer of thanks. It was the third time the Kenyan outpaced runners in the annual event. And he covered the 42.1-kilometre course in 2:07:57 hours — breaking his previous record, in 2009, by 34 seconds.

This year, Mungara had more than 20,000 participants behind him.

Officials said the 21st running of the marathon had its most successful year, raising more than $2.7 million for 127 local charities and setting several course records.

Highlights include:

• A dramatic final sprint won Sharon Cherop, also from Kenya, the women’s title, running one second ahead of Tirfi Tsegaye, of Ethiopia.
• Hamilton resident Reid Coolsaet, of the Speed River Track Club in Guelph, came 10th, with the fastest time ever by a Canadian on Canadian soil — in 2:11:22 hours, achieving the Canadian Olympic standard for the 2012 Games. His time eclipsed the mark of 2:11:34 previously set in 1995 by Peter Fonseca, Ontario’s labour minister.
— Half-Marathon Highlights
• Ed Whitlock, of Milton ran a world-record for 79-year-olds, finishing in 1:34:27 hours. He holds the world-record for the fastest marathon in the 70-plus category, set in 2004.
• Dagim Yeshitela, of Mississauga, won the men’s half-marathon in 1:03:24 hours.
• The women’s race was won by Nicole Stevenson of Toronto, in 1:18:06 hours.

Did Canada’s firearm-phobic urban elites score an own goal? Did they open up a political opportunity for Stephen Harper? Many commentators seem to think so.

I’m not as sanguine as some, but if, by their narrow rescue of the registry, Ottawa’s gunless wonders did elevate a wasteful program of loony liberalism into an election issue, it may open up an opportunity to re-examine the debate about gun control.

The police carry guns for a reason: They’re great tools for law enforcement. Letting firearms become the monopoly of lawbreakers, far from enhancing public safety, is detrimental to it. Canada has gone out of its way to make criminals as invincible, and victims as vulnerable, as possible. This wasn’t the aim of gun control, of course, only the result.
