Historic win for women
In an inspirational story for all young women with dreams, Emma-Jayne Wilson has become the first woman to win the Queen's Plate in its 148-year-old history.
The 25-year-old Brampton native fulfilled a goal she put down on paper six years ago before she had ever even sat on a racehorse. The night before Sunday's race, she was flipping through a book titled Women in Racing when she same across a hand-written note she penned six years ago vowing to make it as a jockey.
Wilson, who has been the leading rider at Woodbine Racetrack for the past two seasons, secured that goal by winning the 1 1/4-mile classic by half a length, riding Mike Fox to victory.
Her win, which comes a year after Josie Carroll became the first woman to train a Queen's Plate winner, proves once again that women can be the best in any profession, even ones dominated by men.
"You don't go into this halfway," Wilson said as she assessed her victory and her career. "Go big or go home."
