A CANADIAN IDOL Who Paid His Dues The Hard Way

Stompin' Tom: Something's stinko

Stompin' Tom Connors' The Hockey Song has been re-recorded for his new album, The Ballad Of Stompin' Tom, and it's in stores on Oct. 28.

And the 72-year country music singer told the Sun Thursday night during an intimate album listening party at his southern Ontario home that he has no idea why the CBC never approached him about using the beloved hockey anthem as their new Hockey Night In Canada theme for the 2008/09 season.

He'd certainly be open to it.

"Nobody's ever asked me," he said drawing on a cigarette and a beer while seated at his kitchen table wearing his trademark black hat.

"I'm open to anything if somebody would ask me. Nobody's said, 'Hey Tom, we've heard of this song before, what do you think?' The arenas throughout North America have been playing it (after games) and it just amazes me that CBC wouldn't say, 'Well, hey, we haven't got this other song anymore and you've got a song,' and the kids are singing it, and everybody's singing it across Canada, everybody knows all the words. But no, CBC has never asked. I can't understand it. I draw a blank on that."

The CBC, who lost their iconic Hockey Night In Canada theme when CTV picked up the rights to it in June, has a contest underway to choose its replacement with five semi-finalists, out of nearly 15,000 submissions, unveiled this past week.

As for re-recording The Hockey Song, Connors said: "I think it was recorded in 1971-72 and the recording was kind of thin, I would call it, so I thought it needed more body and that kind of thing. "

I have the utmost respect for Tom. If you take the time to read Before the Fame it is well worth the read, and will open your eyes to just how difficult it is to be an artist. I have not stayed overnight in jails to have a pillow, but I have paid my dues just like Tom has, and if anyone cares enough to go have a look, I am part of a community of musicians who have paid their dues the hard way as well. I can relate stories of being on the road where I have put more than 150,000 k in less than a year solid with no sleep, and no crew to lift equipment. I've done years of it before having any success. This community is like any other industry, there'll always be the handful of lazy assholes that ruin it for the rest of us.
