In the wake of the assassination attempt on United States Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, commentators are predictably pointing fingers. Americans, we are reminded, stockpiled guns after President Barack Obama came to power. Failed Tea Party candidate Sharron Angle talked about using “Second Amendment remedies” in the run-up to the 2010 mid-term elections. Former Vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin had Ms. Gifford’s constituency “in the crosshairs” on her web site. And so on. To hear many pundits tell it, particularly those on the left, murder is but the tragically logical extension of an overheated, gun-happy body politic.

Not so fast. It would be neat and tidy to blame this tragedy on America’s love affair with firearms or its current state of partisan polarization. But the sad reality is that the assassination of public figures is hardly unique to the United States. Read More »

Dr Laura quits, despite liberal and black defenders

After using the "n-word" on the air (to make what many, including black callers to Al Sharpton's show, understood was an obvious point about who gets to say what, and why that's a stupid made up rule), Dr. Laura quit her radio show.
Her contract was up at the end of the year anyway.
And I was never her biggest fan. There was always something sketchy about her "backstory" that made me distrust her, no matter how true her overall message was
That's not (quite) the point, however.
Despite all that other, well known sketchiness, she ultimately left radio over the "n-word."
Not sure how we're supposed to have that "honest discussion about race," or anything, if only certain individuals are "allowed" to say a certain word based on the amount of melanin they (claim to) have in their skin.

Even more peculiar is how Dr Laura was actually defended at least in part by several leftists at Huffington Post and elsewhere.
Clearly, however, Schlessinger got the message she'd get no backing from conservatives and threw in the towel after 30 years of leading the fight against cultural decay in America.
Who can blame her for being disgusted?
