CBC Fruit Fly Guy, Aug.28 2009 - The number of sockeye returning from the ocean to the Fraser River this year is one of the lowest in the past 50 and follows two years of dangerously low returns. In fact, we have witnessed decades of decline for diverse sockeye populations from the Fraser Watershed, some of which are now on the brink of extinction.
Vancouver Sun, Aug.26th 2010 (link fixed) - Fishery officials estimated Tuesday that more than 25 million sockeye salmon will return to the Fraser River this year, the largest number since 1913.

Time for my predictions for the future.  Don't worry, they won't be weather related. The global warming religion is splitting into two as a result of the recent scandals engulfing by the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and I see that split accelerating, and ultimately causing a fundamental change to the global warming religion. Update: I'm right already! On the one hand, you have the high priests of the global warming faith, like Elizabeth May and David Suzuki and Al Gore, who squawk about "climate catastrophe" and insist that unless action is taken right now, we're all doomed!  We'll call these people the Option A crowd.

Our new ban on plastic bags has caused minor inconvenience for people who have long taken free grocery bags for granted. But a rise in spurious shoplifting accusations is an unintended side effect of this city bylaw.

A plastic bag serves as a marker of payment; anyone who has shopped at a major record store knows a sealed or stapled plastic bag was until recently the only ticket to leaving the premises without drawing the unwelcome attention of security. The 5-cent surcharge for a plastic bag means that wandering in and out of stores with a handful of goods is increasingly the norm, a situation that can lead to more than a few confrontations based on misunderstanding.

A slump in the economy may understandably put shop owners on the defensive in anticipating theft, but the plastic bag ban has made it much more difficult to pick out a shoplifter from an environmentally concerned shopper or, for that matter, a frugal one. Since the bag ban, I have witnessed an increasing number of incidents at stores where staff have confronted people leaving with a carton of milk or even walking by the storefront with a pint of strawberries. I have been challenged for the price of bread purchased at a nearby store and safely tucked away in my own canvas bag.

Shaming the shoplifter is one thing, but shaming the innocent customer is another. While stores have been relying on the plastic bag as a de facto proof of purchase, not to mention as mobile advertising, the bag ban requires shop owners to think of a new way of separating patron from perpetrator.

For the customer, becoming more diligent about saving receipts is one strategy, although at many stores these are not itemized and offer little proof of anything. Stickers are another option, where every item purchased is duly marked at the cash register. And not everyone seems to run into this problem – from what I've seen, merchants could save on stickers by offering them only to young people, who are, as usual, the most frequent victims of unwarranted suspicion.

And then there's the issue of trust. Vigilance is understandable, and the cloth bag does offer a ready-made alibi to wily shoplifters. However, if plastic bags are slowly being phased out, it means there needs to be a change in thinking about security. Catching a glimpse of someone with a peach in her purse doesn't imply the surreptitious activity it used to.

On the one hand, this might require that shoppers be watched more carefully from entrance to exit, their possessions searched and backpacks retained upon entry – a total surveillance scenario that seems nearly as unpleasant as a future of degraded ecosystems. On the other hand, can we ask for a little less suspicion and more benefit of the doubt?

Protecting the environment is not just about saving the rainforest or freeing the whales, it's about making Toronto a place that produces a little less waste. For their part, merchants must learn to scale back too – on accusations of shoplifting they have been making of late against customers who are trying to do their bit for the environment.

Stores that have long benefited from the free advertising emblazoned on their plastic bags would do well to consider how much more they will lose at the till from chasing consumers away, compared to their losses from shoplifting. They may well have to get more creative in policing their customers, but it's hard to believe that the plastic bag ban has made thieves more daring, or that the canvas bag has turned legions of shoppers into shoplifters.

Titled Not Evil Just Wrong: The True Cost of Global Warming Hysteria, the film presents a devastating account of the shaky foundations and hefty price of Mr. Gore’s brand of self-interested and hypocritical alarmism.

Created by the Irish film making duo of Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney — who made another excellent documentary about the “dark side of environmentalism” called Mine Your Own Business — Not Evil provides the perfect rebuttal to Mr. Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth.

Despite being chock-a-block with inaccuracies and misrepresentations, Mr. Gore’s movie has frightened schoolchildren all over the world, driven the public policy debate, and garnered both an Academy Award and a Nobel Peace Prize for its star.

Not Evil — which is due to be released later this year — will appear at a crucial time.

The world’s crisis-beset nations are due to meet in Copenhagen in November to concoct a new policy straitjacket to succeed the meddlesome but utterly failed Kyoto Accord. If global warming’s U.N.-based ringmasters have their way, this will lead to a slashing of industrial production in developed countries and to a huge extension of boondoggle redistributionist schemes to fund “green” technologies in developing countries.

I'm sure all of us sane people, and the occasional liberal, are sick and tired of hearing about this. Green , green , green. Not money, not colour, but environmental nonsense. The planet is burning up, or the planet is going to freeze. They are not sure which but it is going to take billions upon billions of dollars, to save us from whatever it is that they are not sure it is we need saving from. But this topic caught my eye and I plan to do whatever I can to help out in this green movement. So whatever your position is in this battle for the environment, make sure you get plenty of rest, and play safe.

Here is a primer for those of you who still don't understand how global warming works:

• The dinosaurs came, but they got too big and fat, so they all died and they turned into oil.
• We drilled for oil, and used most of it to spray on ducks, and the rest we turned into carbon dioxide.
• Carbon dioxide is a hot gas, and it's making the Sun hotter, which is making the Earth hotter, which makes polar bears sweat, and that's a bad thing.
• To make the Earth cooler and make polar bears happy, Canadians will pay money to Stephane Dion, who will give all of it back.
• The exchange of money will cool the Earth (ok, this part is a bit vague).
• Farmers are worried that they won't get enough back after all of it is given back (clearly they are confused, because everyone is supposed to get all their money back, a process that results in global cooling in a way that is not entirely understood by non-Liberals).
• Liberals who are worried that farmers won't vote for them are complaining loudly, which is generating even more hot air (which warms the Sun and makes polar bears sweat even more, and that's a bad thing).
• Stephane Dion is going to change the plan by making the carbon tax even stronger, making farmers happy so that they stop bothering Liberals.
• This results in less hot air and comfortable polar bears.
• The happiness of farmers who might vote Liberal will cool the Earth (ok, this part is a bit vague too).

Remember, if you don't believe this science, David Suzuki is going to throw you in jail.

There’s some bad news for Al Gore. The former vice-president and current green crusader recently issued a challenge to the U.S. to “commit to producing 100 percent of our electricity from renewable energy and truly clean carbon-free sources within 10 years.”

Gore insisted the goal: “is achievable, affordable and transformative. It represents a challenge to all Americans - in every walk of life: to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.”

Which could be true, but don’t tell him about Banff. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is complaining that Parks Canada has spent $1.8 million building a solar-powered toilet in the national park. The facility has been under construction for two years, and still doesn’t work.

“I think that when it comes to washroom facilities, people aren’t looking for something over the top, with using rainwater or solar panels or anything like that,” said Scott Hennig, of the CTF. “They just want them to be open and available and something that’s going to meet their needs when they need it.”

Obviously Mr. Hennig lacks Mr. Gore’s vision. You have to think big to get somewhere in this world. But at one toilet every two years, Mr. Gore's 10-year timetable is looking a tad optimistic.
