Drivers following too closely on the highway caused a seven-vehicle accident this morning that sent three people to hospital and had traffic backed up halfway across the city.
The chain-reaction crash started shortly after 8 a.m. when two vehicles collided in the Highway 401 eastbound express lanes, directly under the Allen Rd. overpass.
Before long, five other cars had plowed into the first two cars. Emergency crews arriving on scene closed off the express lanes, leaving traffic backed up all the way out to Highway 427, said OPP Const. Julia McCuaig.
“It caused a little bit of a chain reaction,” McCuaig said. “There’s no other reason, they were just travelling too closely together.”
Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
