The Liberals have appointed one of their own MPPs as a justice of the peace – a breach of their promise not to make patronage appointments, critics charge.
"This is exactly what (Premier Dalton) McGuinty promised he wouldn't do," New Democrat MPP Peter Kormos said yesterday.
MPP Ernie Parsons, who has represented Prince Edward-Hastings riding since 1999, will start his appointment July 11. He plans to resign as MPP the day before.
"I followed the open process, there were no shortcuts provided for a politician in that process," Parsons said in defending his cabinet-approved appointment.
Parsons, an engineer, said he has always been interested in law.
