My daughter turns 13 this week. Yes, thanks for the condolences. If there is ever a good time to rear teenage girls, this can't be it, right?
I was thinking about my Avi as lawyer Julian Falconer reported the advisory panel's findings into safety at Toronto schools, a probe conducted following the death of 15-year-old Jordan Manners inside C.W. Jefferys in North York.
How would Avi cope in such a school? Forced sex in the stairwell. Guns. Enough knives to "fill a Home Hardware." Sexual harassment of teachers. Drugs. Gangs. Tolerance of this toxic brew.
Avi wouldn't face this type of environment because YOU as a responsible and concerned parent wouldn't allow it.
Our schools are unhealthy, Falconer said, after looking at the Toronto District School Board, and two schools in particular, in northwest Toronto – the poverty-challenged suburbs where more than nine in 10 students are non-white.
Out of nine non-white students how many are carrying weapons, how many are not able to cope with the curriculum, how many are failing........I will bet the % is minimal because again their parent/parents will not allow it.
Our schools are unhealthy because our society is unhealthy, Falconer said. The school is downstream from the problems our society has spawned. If we send balanced, well-adjusted, engaged, happy children to school, then the classrooms and hallways will be happy, safe places.
