If You Don't Excercise Some Level Of Oppression...

...don't expect your children to strive to be over achievers and we don't have to look to those families where the children set the standards.

Barbara Kay: Implications of the ‘Chinese mother’ school of oppression
Is the parenting style of Chinese mothers really superior to those in the west?

I attended a public high school in Toronto whose population was virtually all Jewish. The scholastic achievements of the school vis à vis other Ontario high schools were so remarkable (about 90% of our high school population went on to university at a time when about 15% of the general population did) that a sociologist wrote a book about it (Crestwood Heights, a gauzily disguised version of the real name, Forest Hill).
What explains the disparity? Culture. When my older sister, a top student would come home and tell our parents she got 95% on a test, my father wouldn’t say, “Oh, my brilliant child, how fabulous you are,” he would say, “What did Lorrie Capp and Syd Goldenberg get?” They were the recognized geniuses of her class. Naturally they had gotten 97% and 98%. My parents were proud of her, but she got the message: They would be even prouder if she beat Lorrie and Syd. Read More »

The Primary Purpose Of Unions ...

Robert Fulford: Teachers’ unions just can’t handle the merit principle

The people who run teachers’ unions in North America fall into a faint when anyone proposes paying teachers on the basis of ability. It’s so radical and outrageous a proposal, so foreign to union thinking, that they don’t even want it tried. They don’t want to be told that it’s already been applied in many places. They don’t want to hear about it again, ever. It terrifies them.
Yet many parents and many politicians believe it could improve education. In March, 2009, when Barack Obama outlined his hopes for education reform, he endorsed merit pay. “We know it can make a difference in the classroom,” he said. “It’s time to start rewarding good teachers.” Read More »

...and their major support comes from the marginal workers and protecting this group  and this has led to the unions controlling the education systems

Are University Water/Food Supplies Contaminated...

University of Lethbridge pays student $7,714 to pursue 9/11 conspiracy theories

As some readers may know, I’ve spent the last few years tracking the 9/11 Truth Movement — these being the conspiracy theorists who believe that the 9/11 terror attacks were staged by American neo-conservatives as a pretext to launch wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Truth movement is primarily an American phenomenon, but there are a few major Canadian “Truthers.” One of them is Anthony Hall, the founding coordinator or the Globalization Studies program at the University of Lethbridge.

As I can report from my personal encounters with Hall at 9/11 Truth events in Montreal and Walkerton, Ont., the man is very passionate about his Trutherdom. But as long as he keeps it out of the classroom, he’s free to believe in whatever conspiracy theories he likes.

Unfortunately, Hall seems to be using his post at Lethbridge as a training ground for 9/11 Trutherdom. His star pupil in this regard is British graduate student Joshua Blakeney, who can be seen in this 2009 video harassing a female CBC reporter with his dark theories about the CBC’s failure to investigate the 9/11 “cover-up.” Blakeney also wrote this charming article expressing delight that author Christopher Hitchens had been sickened with cancer. Indoctrination Opportunties...

2040 Alumni of Ontario Early Education 2010 Class

How Ontario can become a world education leader

By David Crombie, and Margaret McCain

Early education is good for the province and politically popular, too.

Indocrination is not education and relieving parents of their responsibilities by providing baby sitting during the formative years creates an atmosphere for indocrination...government can do no harm.

Should Read: Parents And Culture Have Something To Teach...

...and it extends beyond Asians to most cultures and particularly the first generation.

Tasha Kheiriddin: Asian students have something to teach

Recently, two articles focusing on students of Asian background , one in the Toronto Star, the other in Maclean’s magazine, have caused controversy among academic and social circles alike.

The reports discussed the fact that these students are academically outperforming their non-Asian peers and gaining greater representation in Canadian universities. The Chinese Canadian Council slammed the pieces for “fear mongering” and stoking an “us versus them” mentality, because they cited concerns some students and university administrators had about this trend. Leftwing Social Engineering...

‘Public schools’ should not mean ‘atheist schools’

Opinion: Why should religious parents be forced to pay more (or get less) than those parents who want an atheistic or agnostic faith-based education for their children? Who gave atheists and agnostics control of the public purse strings?

Do They Still Teach Civics...

Civics

I believe Civics is a mandatory course in high school in this country, but apparently the curriculum in this class doesn't teach children about basic respect for the institutions of this country...
When Jeremy Dyer was selected to represent his province because of his human rights art, he had no idea he'd find himself in line to shake Prime Minister Stephen Harper's hand.
The notion was an affront to Dyer, an activist who vehemently disagrees with many of Harper's policies.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were both in attendance, as the Queen unveiled a cornerstone to the museum.
Then, standing in front of cameras alongside his peers, Dyer heard rumblings the prime minister was en route.
“I didn't know until literally minutes before,” said the Memorial University student. “I was pretty outraged that he was going to be there... I told them I would politely decline to shake his hand if he attempted.”
However one feels about the man, one should at very least respect the Office.
Of course, this failure of basic manners can only be in part from the influence of the socialist school system.  The main failure belongs with this boy's parents.

Message To Teacher Unions: UP YOURS!

Former Ontario premier Mike Harris receives an honorary degree from Nipissing University on June 11, 2020.

June 14, 2010 – 12:47 pm

Last week, former Ontario premier Mike Harris received an honorary doctorate from Nipissing University. Nipissing pushed ahead with its decision to honour Harris despite warnings by the major Ontario teachers’ unions that they might retaliate by denying practicum job placements to Nipissing student teachers.
Nippising graduates roughly 800 students a year, students who must complete in-class work at Nipissing, as well as three practicum placements in order to graduate. The practicum placements see the student teachers placed in a classroom setting under the supervision of a teacher, experiencing everything they can expect to in a full-time career. Completing these practicum placements is an absolute requirement. Being denied a placement would make it impossible to graduate Read More »

You Have To Wonder Why It Has Been Wine And Roses...

...between McGoonty and Union Goons. Possibly because he has given union goons carte blanche; ie: all day kindergarten, using retired teachers as subs, etc.

Union still hysterical over Harris: Blizzard

Of all the small-minded exercises the province’s teacher unions have been involved in — and there’ve been many — the way in which they’re threatening Nipissing University over the honourary degree they gave former premier Mike Harris Friday takes the cake.

How to perpetuate bias and intolerance on Canadian university campuses
Posted: April 08, 2010, 1:00 PM by NP Editor Filed under: Full Comment,Canadian politics, universities

A Full Comment reader sends in these observations: There are two advertisements for university positions listed in the business section of April 7th’s Globe and Mail on Page B20. They both are troublesome in indicating the direction of our universities, especially when considering the recent articles on reverse racism by Barbara Kay and Jonathan Kay in the National Post, and the statement to Ann Coulter by the provost of the University of Ottawa  1. The first advertisement, by the University of Windsor, is for a Director of the Office of Human Rights, Equity, and Accessibility. It is seeking “Those who would contribute to the further diversification of the University include, but are not limited to, women, persons with disabilities, members of visible minorities, and members of sexual minority groups. The University of Windsor invites individuals to apply to its welcoming community and to self-identify as a member of one of these groups. First, I am surprised they didn’t include minority religion groups in their list of qualifications. That is the only minority group omitted except for the mentally disabled.
