......Stats Canada says crime is down and the homicide rate in Toronto is down and as a Torontonian I still travel the streets at all hours of the day and night without fear but I am concerned about the failure of our politicians to tackle the problem because of their concern about race relations and delays in our criminal justice system (those charged in the murder of Jane Creba are just coming to trial) and it appears the latest murder raise similar concerns for the public at large.....
Witness arrested in horrific 401 incident
as evidenced by citizenry comments:

we need peace in our country, the young genaration need to educate there self an stop the violence
gerry
Wonderful city you have. Glad I'm here and you're there.
It's all those damned gun clubs!
nothing
I'm amazed by my reaction and the reaction of most people I know, we make a joke of it now. Murder is becoming so common place that no one is really surprised or disturbed. Which is the disturbing part.
Sued
The irony is lost on you.
Rebecca
Every day it's another horrific crime story. As a young woman new to Toronto I am becoming more and more scared every time I check the news updates at work. I sure didn't watch my back when I was growing up in rural mid-western Ontario, but I sure do now.
mark
Sue, what makes you think that this terrible event has anything to do with young people? I don't believe that it mentions the ages of anybody involved in the incident in the article.
I agree that we need peace in our country, but any suggestion that violence is entirely the fault of one generation is blind ignorance.
AJ
You took away disapline and look what happened
John M.
You better stay where you are Gerry. Indeed all these gun clubs are causing all the problems in Toronto. To be safe, we should all arm ourselves...just incase one of these gun club members show up at our doors.
John
R.I.P Whoever you are.
It's a sad state, not just our country but the whole world is in. We've become accustomed to hearing about deaths and murder and we just continue life as if nothing matters...it's the "ME" generation.
t-dot
Big City, Big City problems...not that living in the 'burbs is sooooooo much safer!!!?
AB
I think this nation needs to teach the Ten Commandments specially in schools.
Rebecca
Well Mark, I doubt it was some geriatrics packin' heat. If I recall it was a 76 year old man who was robbed at gun point not more than 48 hours ago at an atm in the west end?... I didn't see him pull an automatic weapon on those young men.
G
this is something straight out of a tv show.
as a student of york university, i go to school everyday wondering what shenanigans are going to occur there.
nobody is safe anymore.
even if this guy gets caught, the max he can do is 25 yrs.
oh how i love the canadian judicial system
John Descoteaux
Gerry,
Gun Club members are vetted and permitted and licensed up the gazoo. How can you believe they have anything at all to do with criminal activity?
virge
I honestly think it's time to reconsider the death sentence in Canada, especially for such brazen crimes. Whoever did this is challenging the public peace. They are basically saying, "Look at me, I can do anything; the most I will get is some jail time and I'll be out again". The joke is on us all.
True Canadian
Thanks Mr. Harper for calling an election to secure your personal goals while doing nothing to ban the handguns or anything in this direction in the last 18 months as being PM. I dont think a lame excuse of being in minority will fit here Sir.
Rafi
Our government is too busy chasing the wrong people.
Would you rather have someone waste time looking for people not filing their taxes OR drug dealer scum?
Josh
Maybe we should stop and take a step back instead of mindlessly blaming these incidences on guns or young people. Why don't we take an honest look at the root cause to all this violence that is plaguing the city?
K Hickey
Don't blame legitimate gun owners for this. Everybody knows exactly which segment/age is responsible for this. Tomorrow morning, the mother of the victim or the perpetrator will be on TV blaming the government/society for her son being involved with guns/gangs.
Kowai
Not to worry people.
We have laws that cover this kind of sh-t.
The police will give this guy a $200 fine for littering.
Because that's all the bleeding hearts in this country will let them do.
Andrew
quote "G":
as a student of york university, i go to school everyday wondering what shenanigans are going to occur there.
>>what do they teach there?
and to the poster who blames harper for not banning handguns, do you think today's shooter would have obeyed a ban?
davis
everyone thinks the city is no longer safe. Well if your into drugs, gangs or the wrong crowd, then yes you have something to worry about. If you read most headlines, it's usually a figure the police are well aware of that gets nailed.Look at the murder rated of the past. were still the same......
Mike Webster
@True Canadian....how much do you want to bet that:
1) The firearm involved in this case is illegal.
2) The firearm is not registered.
3) The criminal who did the shooting doesn't have a firearms license.
In other words, banning law abiding people from safely owing and enjoying the use of firearms would have done NOTHING to prevent an incident such as this one. Criminals by definition igore the law. Why would a ban that simply disarms the law abiding be any different? Murder is banned and this person still committed murder. Why would a ban on handguns affect those who are already effectively banned from having them have any impact on crime?
The truth is that it doesn't Just ask the British, the Australians and the Jamaincans (along with many others who made that mistake)

The problem society all started when our youth were told, they didn't have to say "Sir" or "Mam" anymore.
The teaching to our youth that their rights come before obligations, plus the allowance of our immoral education system is a major reason, why such violent crimes against each other occurr.
With GOD being removed our institutions such as schools, court's, governments etc., have lead to a decline in our moral judgement and our obligations as citizens in our community and our country
Jen in Windsor
Hopefully Sue, you can lead the newer generations in the education you reference. I counted only eight errors in your comments.
Franky
Don't you love it when they spend all this money on having multiple aircrafts patrolling 400 series highways catching ppl going 110km/h and having a million officers setting up speed traps across the province? How about gun crimes that can DIRECTLY kill innocent people?
The excuse that the OPP isn't responsible for gun crime is not acceptable. If they have all this extra money, that means Dalton McGuinty over-funded the OPP and under-funded the Toronto police.
