This lovely and moving testimony to the greatness of Allah comes to us from "Jameela, Messenger of Allah," jameelamoa@gmail.com, whose IP address is 24.99.38.164, which traces to Marietta, Georgia. Jameela sent an almost identical message to SIOA on August 23, and has sent me a number of other love notes over the last few weeks. But in this one, his piety, fervor and eloquence are unmatched:

A little more than a week ago Constantin Film sent YouTube the “reference files” for Downfall, the 2004 German movie about the dictator’s last days. Constantin, which owns the rights to Downfall, asked YouTube to find and take down every video that included a clip from the film. YouTube can do this automatically — it plugs a studio’s reference files into Content ID, its copyright infringement search tool, and then mines its video database for any clips that match the files. Over the course of a few days last week, Content ID turned up lots of videos that appeared to infringe on Downfall. The system blocked them all. But Content ID is a soulless computer program; it doesn’t understand sharp political satire, trenchant sports commentary or biting cultural criticism. Content ID thus couldn’t tell that it was pulling down videos that were likely protected by the fair use exception to copyright law. Many of the Downfall clips on YouTube were inspired by one of the funniest Web memes around — videos showing Hitler fuming about the war paired with English subtitles that reveal him to be angry about something altogether less serious. Among the videos Content ID removed were those of Hitler ranting about getting banned from Xbox Live, Hitler finding out about Michael Jackson’s death and Hitler finding out that bloggers remember him mostly as an Internet meme.

Two years ago, city councillor Rob Ford made disparaging and stereotypical remarks about people of Asian descent, saying “Oriental people work like dogs” and that “they're slowly taking over.”
Ford initially defended his remarks as complimentary, and only apologized after city councillors voted to force his apology
So, why is this relevant now?
Ford recently announced his candidacy for the mayor's seat in one of the most diverse cities in the world. As a public figure, the mayor represents Toronto both in Canada and abroad.
Our mayor is a reflection of our city and our people. He or she should be a leader we can be proud to call our own.
As a Torontonian of Chinese descent, the sting of Ford's comments lingers even now. And I know many of my fellow Asian-Canadians feel the same way.
To gain the trust of voters, particularly ethnic minorities such as myself, city councillors need to do more than just throw around words like “diversity” and “multiculturalism.” They need to demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and a real understanding of the racial dynamics in Toronto.
This city may be diverse, but there is a lack of integration among Toronto's ethnic communities. As local leaders, city councillors shouldn't reinforce these divisions – they should break them down.
I recall attending anti-racism and anti-oppression sessions during my time as a member of the Toronto Youth Cabinet several years ago. The city should offer similar programs to the general public. It should also host more intercultural events that will bring various ethnic groups together. Far too often, I see events such as the Toronto Chinatown Festival marketed and publicized specifically to Chinese communities. Meanwhile, other minority communities are left in the dark about these kinds of festivities, and as a consequence, lose out on an opportunity to explore and understand another culture.
Only when city councillors show this kind of racial awareness and act upon it, can they possibly earn my vote, and the vote of thousands of other Torontonians like me.

Why Not...

...it is obvious that our left wing clown council are not going to take any action so why not make them another source of revenue that our clown councilors can piss away but I would include those who are deemed homeless, even when thousands of $$$ are spent on shelters for the homeless, and would make it mandatory that "panhandlers" issue receipts to people who could claim charitable contributions and Canada Revenue would expect tax returns.

Let's take the following one step further and make a panhandler our Pan Am Game Mascot...

In a late entry for Most Hypocritical Column of 2009, Angelo Perischilli argues in The Hill Times that these newfangled “blog” thingies — and their altogether scandalous lack of “editors, producers, and responsible journalists” — have made it “hard to see the difference between truth and lies and justified and unjustified accusations.” Now, cast your mind back to two whole weeks ago, when Perischilli informed us in the Toronto Star of an impending Liberal coup, apparently planned in plain sight at the bar at the Château Laurier, without so much as explaining how he purported to have the information in question.

Jason Kenney didn’t accuse the social justice group KAIROS of being anti-Semitic, Rosie DiManno argues in the Star. He just said the Canadian government has “defunded organizations … like KAIROS, who are taking a leadership role in the boycott, divestment and sanctions against (Israel).” We think it might have be fair to note the sentence with which Mr. Kenney introduced the government’s defunding strategy: “We have articulated and implemented a zero tolerance approach to anti-Semitism.” Sort of changes the mood, no?

Reports Of Anonymity's Demise Are Premature

Well, this is clumsy quoting. In fact, it's not a direct quote at all; more a cherry-picking of statements from a 10 minute interview, strung together and placed in quotation marks;

“When someone's just blogging anonymously because of employment concerns or whatever, it doesn't matter,” said Catherine McMillan, who writes a political blog called Small Dead Animals. Government critics in oppressive regimes have every right to secrecy, she added. “As soon as you use anonymity as a shield, to set up hate sites or write outrageous things, you should expect anything and everything to come back at you.”

That said, it does bear a passing resemblance to what I told Susan Krashinsky. I explained that there are individuals who choose anonymity for employment reasons, for reasons of personal safety (bloggers in war zones); while there are others (I mentioned the once anonymous Richard Fernandez of Belmont Club fame) who simply prefer their content to stand on its own merit.

However, I also hold that when individuals exploit anonymity to defame or, as has happened in my case, actually create a site to write under my stolen identity, they should expect everything and anything to come back at them.

Anonymity isn't a right of blogging, it's a tool. Use it appropriately, and few will take issue with your choice. Use it to misrepresent, attack and defame, and all bets are off. Someone will be out to get you.

Besides, anyone who uses Google's platform to shield their identity is a fool to begin with. Contrary to the title of the piece - "The virtual end of online anonymity " the ability to write anonymously on line remains a keystroke away from your nearest offshore server.

Update: Right on cue, an anonymous commentor pops into the Globe and Mail comments section to defame me.
