Some motorists are fuming over a rule that would forbid them from making left turns on downtown streetcar routes. But the ban reflects the pre-eminence of public transit and should be carried out.
Streetcars packed with riders find themselves, all too frequently, stuck behind vehicles attempting a tricky left turn at busy Toronto intersections. Scores of TTC commuters can experience needless delay due to one turning car carrying a single occupant.
A ban on these left turns has already been approved in principle at city hall. But opposition is growing as it is about to be implemented.
There is concern that drivers, forbidden from turning left, would have no alternative but to go the opposite way and manoeuvre through quiet neighbourhood streets.
Perhaps. But this seems a small price to pay for a significant improvement in the flow of public transit.
The ban could become more palatable with more frequent and efficient streetcar service. Indeed, that might convince some drivers to make the best turn of all and leave their cars at home.

Federal officials are looking into an alleged immigration scam that's sending hundreds of Mexicans to Toronto as bogus refugees so they can earn good money working at construction sites within hours of touching down.
Canadian officials said large ads are being placed by unscrupulous immigration consultants in Spanish-language newspapers advising Mexicans to come here to work since the U.S. has closed its doors. Mexicans do not require a visa to travel here.
Officials said one ad shows the Toronto skyline and boasts that Canada is "voted the No. 1 country in the world for living four years in a row."
For a fee, the Mexicans are told who to call for jobs and accommodation upon arrival as refugees at Pearson airport, immigration officials said.
Cosmo Mannella of Local 183 of the Labourers International Union of North America said the Mexicans take away jobs from Canadians, and pose health and safety risks on job sites because of language or other barriers.
"There has been a large increase in the number of Hispanic people working in the residential sector," Mannella said yesterday. "We need more workers but getting them this way is bad for the country and industry."
"Studies conducted by mental health professionals have shown that Muslim men and women are often offended by the most unexpected items, including baby rattles, hummingbirds, home appliances, or geographical maps with polar ice caps. On the top ten list of the most offensive things are rectal thermometers and the word 'allometric,' which many consider an underhanded insult to Allah."

Question: Why did the McGuinty go to a publicly funded, faith-based school to tell us Conservative Leader John Tory's plan to publicly fund-faith based schools endangers public education?
Answer: Because it's all he's got, turkeys.
So far, despite media hysteria, the polls haven't really changed. Premier Dalton McGuinty's Liberals are stuck at 40% support -- with the Conservatives stalled five or six points back.
While those numbers give McGuinty enough to win, they won't give him a majority government.
If that holds, McGuinty won't be celebrating Oct. 10. That's why McGuinty keeps doing his Chicken Little routine that on Monday, saw him descend on a poor, unsuspecting publicly-funded faith-based school (Catholic) to denounce public funding for faith-based schools (non-Catholic).
A few years ago, McGuinty, his past and present education ministers (Gerard Kennedy (who made his bones on the backs of the poor and hungry) and Kathleen Wynne), and other Liberals said the policy he's now denouncing was the fair thing to do.
So why is McGuinty, educated at a publicly funded, faith-based school, smearing Tory as a segregationist and fear-mongering by implying that whatever's going on in those privately-funded Muslim, Jewish, Christian, Hindu and other faith-based schools, it's probably not anything good?
Why is this self-described champion of diversity, stooping to this?
Because what else is he going to do, silly, to get his support up to the 43% level he needs for a majority government?
Run on his record of keeping his election promises? Ha, ha ha!
I am unendingly amused by the presumptions made by the Liberals and their coat-tail-clingons about "Stephen Harper's closeness to George Bush". Our local heroes just wanted to say thank you to Canada's latest war heroes.
In fact, Toronto firefighters had something special planned for the fallen troops along the Highway of Heroes until water was thrown on the plans at the last minute -- leaving some firefighters hotter than a four-alarm blaze.
They were all set to salute the three returning hearses when the call rang out.
"Stand down," came across their radios. "Return to your stations." They were stunned.
Five minutes more and they would have shown the soldiers' families how much they appreciated their loved ones' sacrifice. "We wanted those families to know we care," said the veteran firefighter who spearheaded the idea and insists every vehicle was within its five-minute response time mandate.
Suck up these new taxes......you deserve them. I don't have a problem paying taxes but this is a case of double dipping and I don't see anything happening a city hall to bring our house in order. A report slated to be debated at today's executive committee states outright that "with very few exceptions" the public is "vehemently opposed" to the city's proposed new taxation measures.
The report notes that not even the tales of woe (my words, not those of city staff) regarding Toronto's "difficult fiscal situation" moved the 600 people who turned up at four consultation sessions last month to give feedback on the roster of eight new taxes Mayor David Miller proposes to introduce under the City of Toronto Act.
"There was general opposition which stemmed from a lack of trust that the new taxes were justified and concerns that potential economic impacts and hardships (for the city and its residents) would result from the taxes," the report says.
That's an understatement! I sat through two of those sessions -- two more than Miller found time to attend -- and heard nothing but anger and frustration from ordinary citizens who feel City Hall is grossly mismanaged, the city is slowly but surely heading towards bankruptcy and councillors care only about their own perks. The opposition to all eight taxes was loud and clear.
