Nothing Changes

Jesse Kline: Bans on ice cream, hockey and beaches; or, another week in nannyland

..Anyone who thinks he has a better idea of what’s good for people than people do is a swine. P.J. Rourke

Politicians must know they cannot craft public policy in such a way as to remove all the risk from life — but that never seems to stop them from trying. This week saw municipal governments across the country launch a concerted attack in the war on fun, just in time for summer.
Last summer, Saskatonians discovered a sandbar that had built-up in the South Saskatchewan River, dubbing it “Saskatoon Beach.” The beach experience is something that can easily be enjoyed by residents of Vancouver or Toronto, but this natural formation created a unique opportunity for people in the prairie city.As many as 750 people a day crowded the beach. And why not? It sounds like a lovely way to spend a hot summer’s day. But then again, it could be dangerous. The sandbar might shift, people might get swept away in the fast-flowing river. Better ban the practice, just to be on the safe side. Read More »

Protest Marchs Are A Magnet For Losers

Wodek Szemberg: In Quebec and Greece, communist kitsch still exists

..The fantasy of the Grand March … is the political kitsch joining leftists of all times and tendencies. The Grand March is the splendid march on the road to brotherhood, equality, justice, happiness; it goes on and on, obstacles notwithstanding, for obstacles there must be if the march is to be the Grand March.

It Is Getting Harder And Harder...

...even for us old farts to remember why we are proud to be Canadians and god forbid we try to voice these reasons in today's multi-cultural, diverse society.

How Soon We Forget
Actually we don't even know now. Publius:
...Our historical amnesia is not the product of an administrative accident. Mistakes like these are never accidental. If people don't remember what Canada was like before, say, 1963 it becomes much easier to redefine Canadian identity...

Once upon a time grandma and grandpa might have corrected Johnny by mumbling something about a railroad and nation building. Divisive Diversity

We Could Give Them Separate Entrances! Their own drinking fountains! And special seats on buses!

A reader writes;
I was at the Toronto District School Board "Futures" conference on Equity the last 2 days and it was every bit as frightening as you would imagine. 300 teachers gave race huckster Tim Wise a standing ovation after he concluded his idiotic rant (via Skype because his flight was fogged in) about how al the ills in the education system are caused by "white privilege" and we need to focus on and accommodate non-whites the way we do disabled people.

Update - The Toronto District School Board is putting the "cult" back in multiculturalism

Spring Is Here And So Are...

Tasha Kheiriddin: Whither the labour movement
 May 3, 2012 – 6:30 AM ET

..It’s hard to blame the May Day protesters: Receiving 4,000 pink slips from Ottawa the day before would make anyone don a “Stephen Harper Hates Me” T-shirt, as many members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) did for their recent march on Parliament Hill.
On the same day, in Montreal, an anti-capitalist group, CLAC, commemorated May Day by throwing rocks at stores and cars, leading to 95 arrests. While the labour movement did not organize that march, it is supporting Quebec students who have been protesting tuition increases for the past 10 weeks, and whose demonstrations have gotten similarly out of hand. Not only are Quebec unions backing the students, but others in the rest of Canada are sending them money: Two Ontario branches of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave $30,000 to the most militant group, CLASSE, with whom the Quebec government refuses to negotiate because of the violence perpetrated during some of their protests. A BIG MOUTH AND AN IPHONE

BLACK BLOC ANONIMITY
For some time now, I’ve been trying to figure out what is required to identify one’s self as an activist.

You come across activists all the time. They are often quoted by legitimate news organizations, offering opinions on issues of the day. Generally their qualifications appear to be limited to an interest in the subject matter. So anyone involved in organizing a Root Vegetable Consumers Against Frozen French Fries (RVCAFFF) protest march can legitimately identify themselves as an “activist”.

No expertise is required, nor any specific experience, though activists often appear to have plenty of background in activism itself, i.e. they’ve been complaining about the same thing for a long time. There was a time when environmentalists needed nothing more than a desire to live in a remote hut without electricity or access to commercial television to consider themselves fully qualified to assess an energy plan that might impact millions of people. Since then, however, universities have discovered they can fill entire buildings with students eager to memorize environmental slogans and other arcania, and “environmentalism” has become a recognized discipline. But you can still be an “activist” by just registering to show up at a review hearing to condemn Big Oil, knowing little more than the price at the pump. Read More »
