Politicians must know they cannot craft public policy in such a way as to remove all the risk from life — but that never seems to stop them from trying. This week saw municipal governments across the country launch a concerted attack in the war on fun, just in time for summer.
Last summer, Saskatonians discovered a sandbar that had built-up in the South Saskatchewan River, dubbing it “Saskatoon Beach.” The beach experience is something that can easily be enjoyed by residents of Vancouver or Toronto, but this natural formation created a unique opportunity for people in the prairie city.As many as 750 people a day crowded the beach. And why not? It sounds like a lovely way to spend a hot summer’s day. But then again, it could be dangerous. The sandbar might shift, people might get swept away in the fast-flowing river.
