‘Palestine’: invented history of an imaginary country

Someone please produce some ancient “Palestinian” currency or the words to the old “Palestine” national anthem…
Perhaps the most conspicuous fact regarding the novelty of the Palestinian nation is that when it was within their power, the Arab leaders never seriously sought to create a Palestinian state during the 1940s, and after the establishment of the State of Israel, from 1948 until 1967, when the West Bank and Gaza were under Egyptian and Jordanian direct rule. Moreover, during that time all Arab leaders referred to the Palestinian issue as a refugee problem. They did not call for the creation of a Palestinian state for the Palestinian nation. Even after the 1967 Six-Day War, United Nations Resolution 242 of November 22, 1967, mentions only “refugees,” not even “Arab refugees”—let alone a Palestinian people and a Palestinian state.
Calls in earnest for a Palestinian state did not begin in the United Nations or elsewhere until the late 1960s or the early 1970s.

Jonathan Kay: Mass student protest in Toronto draws seven people

Toronto student protest: Stand back, don't everybody crowd in at once
..On my way to a noontime event in Toronto, I came across this protest outside Bob Rae’s constituency office. [Correction: As commenter David Reed notes below, the office in question, while used by Bob Rae, is also that of Glen Murray, provincial minister of Training, Colleges and Universities. I should have mentioned this, and regret the oversight in my original post — JK]
It’s an anti-tuition demonstration, called in sympathy with Quebec’s student protesters. The Montreal strikers were able to block entire streets for a time, but then summer came along and the turnout has dwindled somewhat.
Probably not to the sad level of the Toronto event, though. I counted seven people.
Their slogan: “Students. United. We’ll never be defeated”

The Liberal Party of Canada will not select a new leader for another 10 months, but that didn’t stop letter writers this week from commenting on who it should be. Many of our columnists and reporters led that discussion, which peaked after Bob Rae’s surprise announcement on Wednesday that he would not be running for the party’s top job next April.
With Mr. Rae out of the picture, many eyes have turned toward Justin Trudeau, whom the Post and others have crowned “the front-runner.” This speculation does not sit well with some readers.

Then why are communist and socialist students in Montreal… giving the Hitler salute?
I take it these gestures are aimed at the cops, as the kids’ way of calling them “fascists.”
But seriously, guys? Do you think most people are smart enough to “carry the one” like that?
Quebec: PLEASE separate already. We’re all sick of you!

Pentagon's Best-Kept Secret: F-35 Fighter Is Progressing Nicely
If you pay any attention to media coverage of the F-35 fighter program, then you know the Pentagon’s biggest weapons program is “troubled” (to use the favored adjective of reporters). Flight tests are lagging, costs are skyrocketing, and overseas partners are beginning to get cold feet. So the Joint Strike Fighter, as it used to be called, is looking like another black eye for the Pentagon’s fouled up acquisition system, right?
Wrong. The reality is that for the third straight year flight tests are ahead of schedule, the cost to build each plane is falling fast, and international partners are so enthused that new customers are getting in line for the F-35 on a regular basis (South Korea will be next). So how come you don’t know any of this?
