The provincial government, which owns the casino, is putting high hopes on the re-branding. Casino Windsor laid off about 300 people this summer as many gamblers stayed away because of a smoking ban, higher Canadian dollar and more competition from Detroit.
Revenue slipped to $168 million in the period from April to September, down from $225 million last year, while Detroit's three casinos posted revenues of about $1.2 billion in 2005 and $1.18 billion through November of this year, according to the Associated Press.
Up to 80 per cent of the casino's customers come from south of the border. It has attracted about 4.5 million visitors each year, and is credited with creating 15,000 direct and indirect jobs since it opened in 1994.
