School Security - An Oxymoron

Wake up! You cannot stop violence in schools and campuses short of setting having students/teachers/employees/parents disrobe when they enter the school, remove anything in the school that can be used as a weapon, increase monitoring in all areas including washrooms, etc. Oops! I am describing the conditions that exist in correctional facilities and we still have murders, knife attacks, gang rape, etc. so forget my recommendations.

I am not suggesting you don't try but be realistic.

TORONTO -- The worst school shooting in North America has prompted Canadian university administrators to revisit security protocols as many flags fly at half staff as a symbol of solidarity.

University of Toronto spokesman Rob Steiner says he'd never second guess his Virginia Tech counterparts who've been criticized for not warning students quick enough about a campus shooter.

Finding ways to better communicate with students in an emergency is one of the things that kept him up last night after word came in that 33 people died in the bloody school rampage.

Dalhousie University administrator Jim Vibert says while security procedures are imperative, so too is tending to the psychological needs of students as a means of prevention.

He says the Halifax-based university has beefed up counselling services in recent months in response to demand by students.

Both Steiner and Vibert agree that Arming campus security guards and installing metal detectors will not address the issue.
