Shootout in Kensington
Teen near death after 18 shots fired on street in midtown market district
By JONATHAN JENKINS, SUN MEDIA

A wild shootout on the streets of Kensington Market early yesterday sprayed bullets down a residential street, tore holes through several cars and left a teenager near death.

"It's possible there was some kind of a gun battle that had taken place," Toronto Police Staff-Sgt. Tom Sharkey said.

"There was a lot of brass on the street."

VICTIM IN LANEWAY

It's believed at least 18 shots were fired in the melee, which happened sometime before 2 a.m.

"A complainant called to say there was someone unconscious at the intersection of Denison and Carr," Sharkey said.

"When officers arrived, they found a gunshot victim in a nearby laneway. He had at least one gunshot wound to the upper torso."

He couldn't confirm the victim, 19, was found with a gun in his possession.

The teen was taken to hospital in critical condition and was not expected to survive.

Homicide detectives were monitoring the case.

No one was arrested.

"Not cool," said one area resident, who had strolled through the area just minutes before the gunfire broke out.

Other neighbours said they had seen bullet holes in nearby parked cars and police officers marking blood splatters and shell casings on the pavement with flourescent evidence markers.

"I heard bang bang bang," said one resident, who didn't want her name used.

'THAT'S SO BULLETS'

"I turned around and said that's not firecrackers. That's so bullets."

She immediately turned and bolted from the area, coming out again an hour later to find police taping off the street.

A party had been going on in a home very close to where the shooting took place but it was not clear if there was a connection.

"This is getting so close to my home," she said.

"This is terrible. An innocent person -- like me -- could have been hit."
