Parking fines in Toronto tripling in price: CTV

Fines for illegally parking in a fire route, handicapped zone or near a fire hydrant in Toronto are rising significantly, CTV News has learned.
Beginning Friday, the cost of the infractions are tripling in price, CTV Toronto's Alicia Kay-Markson reported.
- Parking in a handicapped zone will result in a fine of $450, up from the current $150
- Parking near a fire hydrant will cost $100, up from $30
- Parking in a fire route will cost $250, up from between $75 and $100
Many city councillors and officials at city hall were unaware of the price increase, and suggested the move is aimed at generating revenue for the cash-strapped city.
The Toronto Police Service parking enforcement unit issues about 3 million tickets each year, which results in about $70 million for the city.
The last parking fine hike came in 2004, when the voluntary payment option was phased out. The city issued a press release at the time indicating the change.
Some drivers are upset the public hasn't been told of the current parking ticket increases.
"I think it's ridiculous," one man said on Thursday.
"It's typical," added another driver. "The city is in a bit of a bind for cash and I'm sure they're looking at all conceivable opportunities, so I'm not surprised."
