Street mission at risk
Taxman garnishes wages of caregiver
For the hundreds of homeless who spend their days wandering Toronto's streets, Marva Ollivierre is a godsend.
This Saturday afternoon, just like every Saturday afternoon, hundreds will flock to Jarvis and Sherbourne Sts. to see the 58-year-old grandmother.
There, they'll receive a home-cooked meal, clothing and anything else she and her husband can provide from the 50% of their combined salaries that they put towards their street mission, Hosanna International.
But now Marva's ability to bring the small joys she has brought to so many lives over the past 14 years is in serious doubt.
She is being targeted by the Canada Revenue Agency for about $50,000. The agency claims she owes the government the money after raising concerns about her tax returns dating to 2003.
