Last Saturday (Chrietien appointee) Sen. Mobina Jaffer was the featured speaker at a fundraising potluck dinner in Trenton, Ont., hosted by the Bay of Quinte Federal Liberal Association.John Brisbois, the president of the local riding association:
"To (the Liberal Party of Canada's) credit, they realized the motivation for people coming was above political partisanship and would be another reason women would be marginalized if we removed her."LPC spokesperson Andrée-Lyne Hallé:
"This is a transition period for senators who no longer are in the Liberal caucus, and riding associations are free to make their choices of who speaks to their members."
You see, rather than attempting to hide things from the public, the government at all levels (including the Obama administration) has taken the idea of transparency to an entirely new level, releasing such a flood of documentation and information all across the spectrum that nobody could possibly sort through it all. In terms of keeping the public informed, think of it as death by a thousand documents. Newspapers and cable media entities simply don’t have the staff required to dig through that much material on everything from budget numbers to job postings, purchase orders and more. But, as Bill explained, an army of bloggers (or one blogger willing to put in the hours and elbow grease) can comb through the mountains of data they release on government web sites. By putting in Freedom of Information Act requests on seemingly mundane budget subjects, bloggers can uncover even more if they have the time and gumption.Posted in Kathy Shaidle |
He related several stories of how smaller, state level political bloggers had found all manner of government malfeasance which was later picked up by the networks. (Occasionally even giving credit to the original finder.)
Kiev is a magnificent city, and it pains me to see it like this, but I should not be surprised. Almost every country I've ever written about is either in hell, has only recently recovered from hell, or is on its way to hell. I hoped when I visited Ukraine that it was on its way out, but I did not have a good feeling about it, as you'll recall if you read my book.
I'm reluctant to wade in as an analyst, though, because I don't know the country on an intimate nuts-and-bolts level. Let me instead outsource my analysis to my World Affairs colleague Alexander Motyl who writes about nothing else. I do know the country well enough to say that what he writes seems exactly right to me.
