Grits take a stand on Tibet
Lee Greenberg, The Ottawa Citizen
TORONTO - Ontario's Liberal government appeared slightly red faced Thursday when it quietly passed a pro-Tibet motion in the legislature. The move came as Sandra Pupatello, minister of economic development and trade, prepared to embark on a one-week visit to the country. The timing, however, couldn't have been worse. Almost daily attacks on the Olympic torch relay have focused worldwide attention on China's human rights record in Tibet and elsewhere. On Thursday, with 300 Tibetan protesters at the doorstep of Queen's Park, the government suddenly passed the following motion: "That, the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, as a long-standing friend of China, express concern with the current situation in Tibet and encourage the parties to engage in meaningful dialogue."
