Dozens arrested in drug, prostitution sweep
STAFF REPORTER
Toronto police today announced almost 300 arrests in a drug and prostitution sweep of the downtown area.
Under the code name Project Revival, undercover officers began an operation Feb. 19 to investigate criminal activity in the neighbourhood of Church and Seaton Sts.
Police arrested 188 people on outstanding criminal warrants, and charged another 96 with drug trafficking and prostitution offences.
The arrests took place in the area bounded by Gerrard St. E., Queen St. E., Church St. and Parliament St.
As a result of the six-week project, 75 people were arrested for drug trafficking and 21 for prostitution. Those 96 people had a combined total of 2,089 previous drug and criminal convictions, police said.
The project was developed through the 51 Division Community Police Liaison Committee, which identified issues that affect the quality of life. The committee meets monthly at 51 Division.
Of the 96 people charged, just 23 actually live in the Church/Seaton community.
This highlights the fact that many drug traffickers come to the community to prey on those with drug dependencies, police said.
The names of those charged were posted this morning on the Toronto Police website.
Although you have to wonder what the staff reporters at CityTV are smoking.....
Mass Arrests May Clean-Up Neighbourhood Where Crime Was King...but I guess the operative word is "MAY."
