Council urged to pay legal bills for politicians

The city's powerful executive committee has agreed to cover the legal costs of two councillors fighting campaign spending complaints -- a tab that could easily top $100,000.
The committee is ignoring warnings from city staff that it has no legal right to spend taxpayers' money in this way.
Councillor Adrian Heaps said the city is in discussions with the Ontario government to change municipal election laws to permit such expenses.
Many councillors say they believe they deserve the same protection from vexatious complaints that's available to MPs and MPPs and aren't prepared to wait three or four years for the province to act, he said.
Heaps and fellow Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti racked up large legal bills fighting challenges to their 2006 election campaign expenses launched by citizens.
