We're getting hosed again
'They are smoking the strong stuff' because city is hiring 4 plant growers at $55Gs a year
They are spending our money like water and somebody better soon turn off the tap.
Ironically, on a day when Toronto city council dinged the taxpayer for a 9% water bill increase, there are city jobs posted paying union scale to use that water to grow and maintain the city's flowers and plants.
If they don't soon pull the plug on this outrageous spending, the taxpayers will be drowning in uncontrollable debt for stupid stuff like this. The city is already $2.5-billion in the red and now is in the process of hiring four plant growers!
When does the insanity stop? And what is the tipping point for people deciding they just can't afford to be a Torontonian any more?
"Plant growers, eh! Even I am surprised," growled an irate Councillor Rob Ford last night. "What are they growing, because it seems they are smoking the strong stuff!"
The close-to-bankrupt and deficit-ridden Toronto actually went to the extraordinary measure of introducing crazy new taxes, increasing old ones and trying to create some innovative ones for the future. So a posting in the department of parks, forestry and recreation for four plant growers to work at a greenhouse location at union wage levels is raising some eyebrows.
The posting describes the "major responsibilities" as an employee who "propagates, grows, plants, installs and maintains various horticultural and native crops for displays including flowering."
Do we really need that here? But did we need Mayor David "Air Miles" Miller to go to an environmental conference last month in Japan as well? You pay for it either way! The only thing growing is taxpayer's frustration!
Meanwhile if you are successful and get this grower's gig you will earn $26.83 per hour -- which adds up to $55,806 per year per grower, which with four positions taps the taxpayer for more than $223,000.
Can we really justify the expense? Veteran Councillor Case Ootes certainly doesn't think so. "It's not how the city should be managed," he said.
SPOUT INSPECTORS
"We also added 21 down spout inspectors today, too. The NDP people who run council say it only costs pennies a day but as you can see those pennies add up to billions."
Of course the big joke around town is they better be growing medicinal marijuana for sale, but all kidding aside Ford and others wonder just what kind of return on investment does the taxpayer receive. The only thing this council seems to be growing is more debt for our children. "Can we call the police?" Ford asked of what he believes is a fleecing.
The job notice for Grower 1, under file 08-CSA16314, said "all employees are invited to apply for this position," it said. "Priority will be given to applicants covered by the Local 416 collective agreement."
Of course -- the union is growing. It's just our money and its flowing out of the pipes onto the ground like a waterfall. And it's more than two years until election day when somebody can build a dam to stop it.
