...you really have to ask yourself if there is even a smigden of truth do those who were swayed really deserve "the right" to vote? I know we allow criminals in prison to vote and I have to wonder whether this same right is extended to those in mental instituations? The success of the ndp in quebec might say yes!

Agar: End the secret society
You own an important enterprise. It is called Canada. But you don’t really know who does what or where a good deal of the money goes.

Presumably one of the first acts of retribution policy initiatives the new Harper majority will take is the removal of the $2-per-vote subsidy for federal political parties. The Prime Minister made no secret of his plan to do so, and he now has the ability to carry it out with limited fuss.
It would be smart to make it one of the government’s first actions, along with other long-standing ambitions (see: Gun registry; abolition of) so they will be out of the way, and long forgotten come the next election. But while the Tory faithful will be happy to see the subsidies go, the election results have changed political realities so much that the need to act (as opposed to the desire to act) seems somewhat less pressing than it used to. On Monday, two female letter writers defended the wearing of these garments. In the words of one: “If covered women are ‘silenced’ or ‘walking coffins’ then, by those same standards, women who wear miniskirts or bikinis are promiscuous and are giving a green light to those who want to touch them in a sexual manner.”
Her words sparked more than a dozen replies.
“I was brought up to believe that modesty is derived from who you are as a person, not what ‘uniform’ you wear,” wrote M. Watson. “This is not about modesty. To feel superior to someone wearing a mini-skirt or bikini is not modesty; it a sense of superiority. I am 61 and don’t wear mini-skirts. I try to be a modest person, but I do not think that my mode of attire is better than others or that others who do not share my beliefs or religion are somehow inferior to me.” Read More »

I don't say this very often but, Good for the CBC.
The Star reports:
MONTREAL–It's the battle no one wants to fight – except the CBC.
Canada's national broadcaster will mark the 250th anniversary of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham with a documentary on the decisive British-French conflict, months after threats from hardline separatists forced the cancellation of a planned re-enactment in Quebec City.
The one-hour documentary, set to air during prime time next Thursday, is already ruffling the feathers of those who opposed the real-life re-enactment
"Why is the CBC choosing to invest money from the Canadian government to reconstruct such a painful moment of Canadian history, one that caused so many deaths, assassinations, fires, and thefts?" said Jean-Paul Perreault, president of Impératif français.
The federal government might not have the nerve to offend the eternally offended separatists, but that shouldn't frighten other Canadians into pretending history didn't happen. The CBC looks good on this one.
