Siding with the Arabs is easy, they've got the numbers and the oil. All Israel can offer is a stable democratic ally.
“There is no likelihood that the U.S. will do the logical thing and vote for Palestinian statehood in the UN this fall,” lamented Andrew Sullivan recently. I’m not optimistic enough to share the noted pundit’s pessimism. I think there’s a good chance that the U.S. will do the logical rather than the right thing this fall.
Would it be logical for America — or Canada, for that matter — to line up with the Arab/Muslim side against Israel in the Middle East? Yes. It’s perfectly logical to line up with the many against the few; the resource-rich against the resource-poor; the militant against the non-threatening, and the adamant against the accommodating. People have done it since time immemorial. It may not be right, but it’s logical.

Presumably one of the first acts of retribution policy initiatives the new Harper majority will take is the removal of the $2-per-vote subsidy for federal political parties. The Prime Minister made no secret of his plan to do so, and he now has the ability to carry it out with limited fuss.
It would be smart to make it one of the government’s first actions, along with other long-standing ambitions (see: Gun registry; abolition of) so they will be out of the way, and long forgotten come the next election. But while the Tory faithful will be happy to see the subsidies go, the election results have changed political realities so much that the need to act (as opposed to the desire to act) seems somewhat less pressing than it used to. As the Arab revolution has rolled out from Tunisia to Bahrain and the very real prospect of a failed-state humanitarian catastrophe looms from Tripoli to Sana’a, the rest of us are hectored and harried to just sit there, do what we’re told, and don’t even think about doing anything that some Islamist crackpot might want to call an imperialist military intervention.
“Thousands of Libyans will die if America and NATO enter Libya,” we are admonished. Who said that? It could have been German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle. It could have been the so-called Canadian Peace Alliance, or the alliance’s mentors in the Khomeinist tyranny in Tehran, or the usual American “troops out” retreads. That is what they all say, after all, but in this case it isn’t even Charlie Sheen. It is what Muammar Gaddafi says, and for good measure he’s tossing in the familiar spectre of Islamist terrorism as the thing we should worry about the most about the Arab uprisings.

Valid Position John...
...but the aricle heading should read The Sins Of The Majority. Those classifying themselves as Christians is around 79% while those that have no religious affiliation is approximately 19%, and the vast majority of these are "agnostic" rather than atheists so is it that wrong for the majority, who are paying the freight. want to promote their beliefs.

McParland compares belief in Allah and God to his misplaced faith in the Toronto Maple Leafs. “I know what it is to put one’s faith in something utterly hopeless. I realize the hours spent trying to figure out what’s wrong with the team, and why it is so perennially disappointing, are all wasted. But big deal. If I want to waste my time on the Leafs, it’s my time.”
True, but there isn’t a lobby to place Leafs souvenir books in our schools. Nor are children dragged against their will to Leafs games. There are no legislators whose guiding principles are derived from the question “What would Harold Ballard do?” Read More »

The much-disputed mosque near Ground Zero has been described as a test of our commitment to liberty. With great respect to pundits on both sides of the issue, I think it is a test of our commitment to the wrong question.
The question isn’t whether people should be able to build whatever they like on their private properties. To this, the answer is a simple yes in a free society, subject only to the appropriate municipal zoning laws and building codes. Anyone who denies others this right because of religious or political sympathies needs a refresher course in the basics.
Except this isn’t the question to ask about the Cordoba Initiative.

I can’t claim to be an Arabist but, having worked in three Arab countries, I have some understanding of the Arab mindset. What John Moore fails to understand is that construction of the “Islamic cultural centre” near the site of the former World Trade Center is a challenge from the Wahabists to America. Its successful completion will constitute “giving the finger” to infidels and be viewed by Islamists everywhere, not as an example of tolerance, but as encouraging evidence of Western decadence and weakness.

Mr. Moore ridicules Ezra Levant’s comparison to building a Japanese military museum near Pearl Harbor, but the proposed Islamic centre is or was to be named “Cordoba House,” Cordoba being the capital of Al-Andalus, the Islamic Caliphate that ruled much of Spain during the Middles Ages which Al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden have pledged to restore.

Pink With A Tinge Of Yellow? They Probably Support US Deserters

You may have noticed this article in the Calgary Herald in December, about the antiwar organization “Code Pink”. After 7 years of opposition to the war in Afghanistan, they finally got around to actually visiting the country, whereupon they learned that the overwhelming majority of women there do not, in fact, support a withdrawal of foreign troops from their country, as had been assumed by Code Pink.
They expected feminists in Afghanistan to support their own demands, never realizing their position was counterproductive to the aims of women in Afghanistan. It would seem logical that a fundamental step for Code Pink, the Herald authors wrote, would be to consult the people who live in the country on whose behalf they advocate, in order to find out what their actions might mean for those affected by it. The article continued:
“Code Pink’s modus operandi is symptomatic of a western feminism that is not rooted in values of global solidarity, but is self-interested, insular and shamefully relativist. It is based on tribalism and rejects internationalist values. In this feminism, emancipation is only for western women — not for women in places like Afghanistan.”
Code Pink has a history of being on the wrong side of democracy, solidarity, and feminism, not only by undermining the mission in Afghanistan which fights against a brutally repressive Islamist group of gender apartheidists, but also in their support of anti-Israeli organizations and terrorist groups.

Our Wishy Washy Position On Deserters Is An Indication

If it was left to our immigration system, he'd share the same fate as the one that probably awaits the 76 Sri Lankan Tamils who arrived in Canada last month aboard the Princess Easwary -- that is, he'd walk free, be set up in a hotel, told he was entitled to work and handed a welfare cheque.
As with the Tamils, bin Laden would initially be detained by the Canada Border Services Agency and then obliged to appear before an Immigration and Refugee Board review hearing to establish his identity.
As with the Tamils, the Minister of Public Safety would likely ask the IRB to detain him while it investigated whether there was "reasonable suspicion" of inadmissability on security grounds.
