HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Right On The Money...

by John Ray (M.A.; Ph.D.)
This next year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union address occur on the same day. It is an ironic juxtaposition of events: one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication while the other involves a groundhog.

Peter Goodspeed: Southern states mark 150 years of trying to rewrite history

June Murray Wells, Director of the Confederate Museum, holds a copy of the Ordinance of Succession on the 150th Anniversary of South Carolina's

They held a ball in Charleston, South Carolina, last week to celebrate the onset of the bloodiest war in U.S. history.

Men in frock coats and militia uniforms joined women in silk hoop skirts to sip mint juleps, as a band called Unreconstructed played Dixie and a squad of historical re-enactors staged a replay of the Dec. 20, 1860 signing of South Carolina’s Ordinance of Secession, which severed ties with the Union and paved the way for the American Civil War.

The 150th anniversary of South Carolina’s secession is the first in a long list of Civil War memorials scheduled to be staged over the next four-and-a-half years that could end up reopening old war wounds.

Festive and defiant, in character with the Old South, Charleston’s Secession Ball sparked a revival of an old debate about whether the most deadly conflict in U.S. history, which claimed a total of 620,000 lives, was fought over slavery or states’ rights. Read More »

Legal Protection For Those Wanting To Wish...

Merry Christmas....‏

I wanted to send some sort of Christmas greeting to my colleagues, but it is difficult in today's world to know exactly what to say without offending someone. So I met with my lawyer yesterday, so acting on advice I wish to say the following :

Please accept with no obligation , implied or implicit , my best wishes for an environmentally conscious , socially responsible ,low stress , non addictive , gender neutral celebration of the summer solstice holiday practiced with the most enjoyable traditions of religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice with respect for the religious / secular persuasions and / or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all .

I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2011 , but not without due respect for the calendar of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make our country great (not to imply that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country) and without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wished .

By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms:

This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her / him or others and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. The wish is warranted to perform as expected within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year or until the issuance of a new wish at the sole discretion of the wisher.

Best Regards (without prejudice)

Name withheld (Privacy Act).

Kelly McParland: Toronto’s shallow, cowardly cops

There is a sad little ritual that plays out a few times a year after one of the senseless shootings that take place with dispiriting frequency in some of Toronto’s less-advantaged neighbourhoods.

Some dolt, or group of dolts, demonstrate their manliness by firing off an illegal handgun. The bullet flies off wildly and hits an innocent victim: a woman in her kitchen, a child in the back yard, an elderly person on the sidewalk. The neighbourhood expresses its outrage that such things could happen and complains at the failure of police to protect them. The police appeal for local assistance in identifying the shooters. No one comes forward. The police decry the fear that prevents witnesses from declaring themselves, noting earnestly that justice is handcuffed when responsible citizens refuse to do their duty out of fear of the consequences or some misplaced sense of loyalty to the transgressor. Chris Selley’s Full Pundit: Michael Ignatieff stares into the abyss

Happy Christmas, your arse

Some farewell 2010 brickbats for Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals.

Sun Media’s Ezra Levant tees off on a very silly-looking bill that would strengthen bilingualism requirements for everyone from Mounties patrolling the Trans-Canada highway to, conceivably, minimum wage employees at airports. Levant ascribes all this to Mr. Ignatieff and his Liberals, for whom “forced bilingualism is a tool to beat up anglophone westerners (translation: Conservative voters) to the delight of Liberal voters in Montreal and Toronto.” It’s actually a private member’s bill in the Senate that was introduced six months ago, but what the hell — close enough! Common Sense Returning To Ameteur Sport?

Coach reinstated after protest over racial slur

Mayor Ford Message To Stintz...

...tell TTC Management and beauracrats to priortize this long outstanding issue and have a solution, cost and implementation date no later than Dec. 24th or expect Santa to handout pink slips. The 12 scond delay excuse shows that this problem has been studied to death and the former TTC chair Mihevic was more interested in the St. Clair Right of Way debacle and the 12 second delay would be offset by the riders on St. Clair getting a 3 minute reduction.

Bureaucratic fear
Re “TTC stalls bus stop for Variety Village,” (Mike Stobel, Dec. 16): The TTC’s actions on this issue are reprehensible. A 12-second delay is nothing, and given the reason, there would be no complaints. The TTC has lost its perspective in bureaucracy and is using expedience and expense to delay, assuming the issue is a flash in a pan that will disappear. Well, it won’t go away. Where is the strong TTC administrator prepared to do what is right — to stand up and take action by putting in a temporary bus stop at the front door of Variety Village now and debate a permanent stop at a later time. Of course, bureaucratic fear prevents immediate action. The TTC continues to hit those who are emotionally and physically challenged. Somebody needs to put on a heavy pair of boots and start kicking butt at the TTC.

Stewart Glassford Newmarket

(Why make any stops at all? That would eliminate all delays)

Shocking arrogance
Re “A kick in the teeth” (Dec. 16): Way to go Mike Strobel, for an excellent column about the Variety Village bus stop madness. The sheer arrogance and lack of compassion shown by TTC brass is shocking, yet not completely unexpected. Perhaps the much-needed stop would have been implemented promptly if someone in TTC administration had a disabled child.

Mark Chisholm Aurora

(Doubt it. Strobel rightly describes them as “heartless”)

Twelve seconds?
So, no bus stop at Variety Village because it would add 12 seconds to the trip (“A kick in the teeth” Mike Strobel, Dec. 16). I wonder how long it takes to install and remove a bike from the bike racks on the front of the bus, that is if anybody ever uses those things? I guess the TTC is only “essential” to some.

Rookie Toronto councillor Mike Layton, son of federal NDP leader Jack Layton and stepson of NDP MP Olivia Chow, objects to a recent Macleans article that asked if Canadian universities are “too Asian.” Mr. Layton put a motion before council calling on Macleans to apologize because the article was “offensive to me personally.” The National Post was able to obtain Mr. Layton’s secret list other personal annoyances he feels it is the city’s duty to address (at someone else’s expense — these are the Laytons remember).

The Phil Kessel Trade: Phil has been a disappointment. He’s been here what, a whole year? — and no cup yet. And he’s, like, a minus nine.
