Paul Russell: Homosexuality, Rex and sin splits readers
Posted: January 16, 2010, 12:37 PM by Paul Russell

Sexual orientation is one of those hot button issues that always brings in passionate letters. That subject was broached last week by John Moore in his column “The Seeds of Hatred,” where he attempted to show how prejudice against gays can lead to death in some Mideastern and African countries.

“It’s time for good Christians to stand up and condemn those amongst them who actively or tacitly contribute to the promotion of hatred,” read his closing paragraph. “Even if that means providing comfort to homosexuals.”

At least a dozen readers let us know that their view of Christianity (sometimes summed up by passages such as, “Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thyself,” Matthew 22:39) doesn’t encompass gays.

“Homosexuality, like murder, like adultery, like theft, is as much a sin and is just as subject to God’s righteous hatred and wrath as any other sin, regardless of what people like Mr. John Moore have to say about it,” wrote Steven Eleftheriadis. “Nor does the Lord somehow separate the sin from the sinner ... [T]he Lord hates sinners.”
