- Adrian MacNair: Ignatieff's search for ideas
-
Following up on Michael Ignatieff’s University Campus Tour, in which he took softball questions from students in ten different Universities over five days, you would expect the Liberal leader to sit down and articulate the platform and policies of the party going forward.
But then again, since the party hasn’t bothered to do so since Ignatieff was crowned a year ago, it doesn’t seem likely it would begin now. Students across Canada had the opportunity to ask questions about the economy, the fiscal deficit, the growing debt, the unemployment rate, the bloating of federal transfers to the provinces, but instead it seems all students are really concerned about is global warming. [Apparently students don't read the news very much]
When Mr.Ignatieff was asked a direct question on the economy at UBC, his answer had nothing to do with explaining the mechanics behind the policies that would improve it. He said the solutions to the deficit are more “pro-growth policies” and policies that “employ young people” and more research for post-secondary education, including getting more aboriginals to attend university. It’s clear that his response was served to fit the audience he was preaching to, but not even the students seemed to understand what, exactly, “pro-growth policies” are. It’s understandable, because Mr.Ignatieff never expanded further on the subject.
