My husband-blogger assaulted by union executive at anti-Israel rally, Toronto (scroll down for updates)

My husband Arnie blogs as BlazingCatFur, and frequently videotapes anti-Israeli demonstrations here in Toronto.

This morning, he taped footage of a demonstration against Benyamin Netanyahu’s visit to the city. The demo was co-sponsored by taxpayer funded Palestine House.

While filming a public demonstration on a public sidewalk, my husband was approached by Ali Mallah -- the Vice President of the Canadian Arab Federation, and high ranking member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE)/Canadian Labour Congress.

Mallah recognized my husband, crossed the street, and verbally and physically assaulted him.

Arnie was unhurt.

This is the latest in a series of shameless public attacks by "peaceful" Muslims and their sympathizers against pro-Israeli Canadians.

If you object to "public employees" and taxpayer funded "community centers" intimidating ordinary citizens, please pass around this video, and contact your Member of Parliament.

When it comes to issues of health and wellness for today’s seniors, there is a crisis that requires our immediate attention: the belief that an aging “tsunami” of Zoomers represents a financial catastrophe in the making. The supposed problems are the health-care and pension burdens we are about to impose on succeeding generations, as they struggle to pay for our huge, decaying demographic. Open any newspaper, walk into any bookstore, type “Boomer” and “crisis” into Google and you can’t avoid dire predictions. (0)

A lesson for Europe from Nate’s Deli

By National Post editorial board  May 29, 2010 – 9:00 am

This week, Nate’s Deli at 316 Rideau Street in Ottawa closed its doors after exactly 50 years in business — erasing from the Ottawa landscape a restaurant famous among locals and Parliamentarians alike. After 50 years of cutting smoked meat (1,500 pounds per week) and making chopped liver (24 pounds per day), founder Dave Smith, now 76, is ready to move on.
But Mr. Smith won’t be heading to the shuffleboard court at Del Boca Vista Phase III just yet. First, he is off to Haiti to create new housing for earthquake victims. Mr. Smith also has some local Canadian charities to manage. And in a few years time, he might even get back into the deli business, he tells reporters.
We mention all this in hopes that someone might get the word out to the folks in France. While Parisians may turn their noses up at knishes and latkes, they could learn a thing or two from Mr. Smith’s work ethic. Read More »

Ismaili Centre, the Aga Khan Museum
Museum and worship centre to be linked by park

Lisa Rochon
After more than a decade in planning and design, a suite of culturally invigorating projects initiated and financed by the Aga Khan are breaking ground in north Toronto.
Two buildings, the Aga Khan Museum and an Ismaili worship centre, will be knit together by an all-season park featuring allées of birch and ginkgo trees and infinity pools made of black granite, designed in the spirit of the Islamic chahar bagh, a formal garden.
The most public of the buildings on the 6.8-hectare site is the museum, designed by the acclaimed Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki in collaboration with the Toronto firm Moriyama & Teshima Architects. Mr. Maki, an Ă©minence grise of sublime, minimal modernism, has designed a reference library and exhibition spaces for Islamic art – handwoven carpets, a 16th-century portrait of Sultan Selim from Turkey, and a 17th-century emerald green bottle from Iran, among hundreds of historic objects. Mr. Maki’s architecture owes nothing to the school of Toronto new modernism, with its gentle exuberance and wood-warm interiors. Rather, his aesthetic favours a highly machined precision. A museum courtyard and an auditorium with a faceted roof structure should afford a subtle play of light.
The Ismaili Centre, designed by renowned Mumbai-based architect Charles Correa, is clad in French limestone and features a double glass roof (sort of what was promised by the Royal Ontario Museum and never delivered by Daniel Libeskind).
“This one is quite an amazing technological achievement,” said Daniel Teramura of Moriyama & Teshima, the partner in charge of the Ismaili Centre. “Charles Correa had this vision of the glass roof. The challenge was to make it work on a technical level.”
Working closely with Toronto-based structural engineers Halcrow Yolles, the architects designed a dome with a high-performance glass fritted to deflect the hot sun. A second interior layer of glass is translucent, allowing visitors to discern a pattern of shadows cast by a steel truss that holds up the roof. On a wedge facing east toward Mecca, the glass is clear so the sky can be seen.
Throughout years of design on the Toronto complex, the Aga Khan, spiritual leader of the Ismaili Muslims and a developer of universities, hospitals and urban regeneration projects around the world, has proved himself to be a sophisticated patron of architecture. The selections of the French limestone and the levels of translucency in the glass were ultimately his.
The Aga Khan Development Network’s acquisition of land on Wynford Drive, next to the Don Valley Parkway, was planned to inject new vitality into the neighbourhoods of Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park, where some 40,000 Muslims live. Both the museum and the worship centre, to be completed in 2013, are designed to engage the public not only through their seductive architecture but also through conferences and outreach programming.
In a neighbourhood defined by generic low-lying industrial buildings and high-rise apartment towers, the Aga Khan’s complex is a welcome, catalytic intervention.

Queers Against Israeli Apartheid: A group founded on the principle of censorship

A QuAIA
protestor and her dog
A QuAIA protestor and her dog

By Jonathan Kay  May 26, 2010 – 11:08 am

Yesterday, I blogged about Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA), a group of anti-Israeli bigots so distasteful that even Toronto’s gay community (which generally is not known for its antipathy toward left-wing causes) has officially shut them out of this year’s gay pride parade.
At yesterday’s QuAIA rally, the big theme was censorship: QuAIA activists wore tape over their mouths, and festooned themselves with fliers that read “free speech.” (One woman even put free-speech fliers on her dog). They claimed that the Pride Parade organizers were censoring their right to air their views about Israel.
Well, lookie, lookie — it turns out that QuAIA itself was founded on the idea of censorship — specifically, the group’s desire to shut down a sexy Middle East themed gay cabaret act (“Gaza Strip Club”) that the group found offensive to their own sanctimonious views. For the full story, check out Drew Rowsome’s article in Fab magazine, of which I will provide this excerpt:
Adding to the general stress level is a protest group, Queers Against Israeli Apartheid, which is leafleting outside and announcing to every arriving potential stripper that “Gaza is not a party.” The group formed the day before upon first hearing of Gaza Strip Club. They immediately decreed that the moniker is offensive and racist and began to distribute leaflets conveniently left over from a protest held the weekend before.

Canadian geese launch amphibious assault

Canadian geese have been known to attack cars.
They poop everywhere, peck cars and hiss at children, but don’t frighten the birds: It’s illegal.

Alexandra Shimo
From Saturday's Globe and Mail
The evolving saga of our beloved bird, the Branta canadensis, is a particularly domestic problem of our own creation. In recent weeks, Canadian geese have attacked senior citizens at a retirement community in Hamilton; their droppings have infiltrated a pharmaceutical company in Oakville, causing health concerns – and, at an elementary school in the same city, they pecked at small children in a near-Hitchcockian frenzy that caused a lock-down on the school. But vengeance is disallowed: the birds are protected by a government that claims to have its citizens’ best interests at heart.
Their flock has pretty much has doubled in the past ten years to almost 250,000, but several wildlife-control and pest-extermination places said they didn’t deal with this growing menace and all their pesky payload because there was “not much they could do.”
Don’t approach them
Canada Geese are nesting at this time of the year and so at their most aggressive, and approaching them is a little like swimming up to killer whale Tilikum to say hi.” Moreover, the birds have the law on their side, and it’s illegal to approach them for the purpose of moving them to a different location. Disturbing the creatures requires a licence, which means proving they’re more than merely a nuisance. When a North York family complained that a pair of birds had taken over their swimming pool and garden, they were told it wasn’t sufficient reason to go near them, explains Brad Gates, president of AAA Gates’ Wildlife Control, who took the call. “Environment Canada takes moving the birds very seriously, and doesn’t give out permits lightly.”
Don’t scare them
Canada Geese not only have their own lobby groups (Love Canada Geese, Coalition to Prevent the Destruction of Canada Geese), it is illegal to scare, haze or harass the birds under the Migratory Birds Convention Act. So while they might peck or chase you, don’t under any circumstances hiss back.
Don’t touch them
At a parking lot in London, Ontario, a few weeks ago, several geese were chasing drivers and denting the cars by pecking them and kicking them with their webbed feet. Yet when Humane Wildlife Control went in to remove the avian delinquents, several members of the public complained that people were touching the geese without a permit. “We were worried about being on YouTube that night,” explains Bill Dowd, president of Humane Wildlife Control. “If there’s any harassment of the geese, it would go viral.”
Don’t shoot them
Needless to say, reaching for your Lee-Enfield when pecked into submission is verboten. Under a few highly proscribed, highly legislated circumstances, you can hunt Canada geese for a few days per year in September, but only if you have a federal Migratory Game Bird Hunting permit, a wildlife habitat conservation stamp, an Ontario licence, the right type of gun, etc.
Like Helena Guergis, Canada geese can put up a noisy fight when moved from their natural habitat. Pyrotechnics usually scare them away, but they’ll be back after a few seconds, says Dan Frankian, who heads Hawkeye Bird and Animal Control. Herding dogs such as collies, Brittanys or springer spaniels are a little better, i.e. the geese will waddle away for several hours before homing again. For real results, he recommends a militaristic-style, multi-prong assault, with pyrotechnics, dogs and birds of prey all working together for an “air-to-air” and “air-to-ground” simultaneous attack. “If you want to remove it and it’s attacking people, then call a professional,” says Mr. Frankian. “They are very aggressive creatures and you need an attack on all fronts.”

Couriers/Cyclists Have Picked The Wrong Martyr For Their Cause

Cyclist had tough childhood

Alcohol ruined Darcy Allan Sheppard’s life from his first breath until his last.

Vigil held in memory of bike courier Darcy Allen Sheppard

Jeremy Nusinowitz
Dozens of cyclists showed up late Tuesday afternoon to a memorial for Darcy Allen Sheppard, a bike courier killed in an incident along Bloor Street last August.
The Toronto Bike Messenger Association (TOBMA) hosted the vigil in Sheppard’s memory on Bloor Street by Avenue Road, where Sheppard died last August in an incident with a vehicle driven by former Ontario Attorney General, Michael Bryant.
A bike that's been painted white sits at the scene where Sheppard was killed. It’s a traditional ghost bike memorial. Dozens of Sheppard's friends and former colleagues gathered at the ghost bike after hearing charges against Bryant had been dropped.
Martin is an avid rider who attended the memorial and is frustrated over the war between vehicles and cyclists in Toronto. With the charges against Bryant having been dropped Martin says the justice system has sent a clear message to cyclists.
“If you ride your bike on the streets of Toronto you don’t stand a chance,” said Martin.
“If I get hit by a car no cop is going to take my side, and if I’m down on the ground dead, I have no story to tell.”
Susan showed up to the memorial as someone who knows all too well the potential dangers cyclists can run into.
“I’m not a courier and I’m not a very militant person, but I do ride a bike and I was hit by a car about four years ago and the driver was not charged,” said Susan.
“My heart just breaks because every single one of these cyclists can be killed and can be damaged.”

“Democracy is hypocrisy: Shariah for Europe”, “Islam will dominate the world” — and other such signs, plus hear the crowd cheer the deaths of soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan — all in Dhimmi ol’ England. (h/t: BCF)
So that was just a short message from one Muslim woman, but there are thousands, hundreds and thousands like me across the world and across Europe who will make a stand. And we will never ever remove our Islamic dress. Ever. So you have a war on your hands and if that’s what you want, that’s what you asked for.
Well, I certainly hope after that demonstration they remembered to gather up their trash…

You just knew there’d be a guy named Mohammad, right?
Three members of a British family visiting Pakistan were shot dead by their relatives yesterday in a dispute over an arranged marriage between cousins.
Mohammad Yousaf, 51, his wife Parviaz, 49, and their daughter, Tania, 23, from Nelson, in Lancashire, were killed in the eastern city of Gujrat when tensions over the breakdown of the marriage between their eldest son and their niece ended in tragedy.
The marriage finished about a year ago but the wife’s brother — who is also Mr Yousaf’s nephew — is believed to have harboured a grudge that his sister was being divorced.
Let this be a lesson: Selling your daughter into sex slavery to a first cousin probably isn’t going to be a pretty as you imagine it.
