Toronto Local/National Activists unhappy with mass media

Wednesday, July 2, 2014 - 6:30pm - Thursday, July 3, 2014 - 8:30pm

Toronto, ON

Hello! we are researchers from Toronto who strongly feel that news is regurgitated, recycled, sensationalized and that many issues (that are given coverage) are not relevant to us, as readers or writers. We are interested to hear about local activist's who feel their concerns/issues are being side stepped by traditional media. In turn do not receive the coverage they deserve.
We welcome all those who are seriously engaged in local social activism, that have or want a global presence. These activists are people who want to bring a real voice to real issues.

I know this is a cliché this is for people who really do want to make a difference. Issues that matter In their local community but could have global implications. Also its these folks or groups and they're not receiving the coverage they deserve.

WHERE ARE MARCHES BEING HELD NEXT WEEKEND?

I haven’t been asked to lead any marches at Pride this year and, frankly, I doubt that’s ever likely to happen!

I’m still regarded by many in the gay community as an enemy and I understand that reaction. I have said and written things in the past that, while never intentionally hateful, caused offence and pain. This isn’t necessarily relevant, in that truth cannot change according to response, but I could and would not say such things any longer. I was wrong.

In the past six months I have been parachuted into clouds of new realization and empathy regarding gay issues, largely and ironically because of the angry and hateful responses of some people to my defence of persecuted gay men and women in Africa and Russia. I saw an aspect of the anti-gay movement that shocked me. This wasn’t reasonable opposition but a tainted monomania with no understanding of humanity and an obsession with sex rather than love.

Lavish First Nations subsidies promote fanciful thinking

Here’s a proposal for dealing with First Nations’ objections to resource development (and projects such as pipelines) on land they claim is theirs by tradition: Let’s have the federal government cut off annual subsidies to reserve governments.

That way, First Nations would have to decide whether or not to allow development based on the same criterion the rest of Canadians use to decide their financial priorities. Can we afford to? Can we afford not to?Without the billions in tax dollars annually showered on First Nations, chiefs and councillors would have to choose with their heads rather than their sentimental hearts.

IMHO another example of where our largesse DOESN'T reach those for who it was intended....

This is similar to my argument that Quebec should lose much of its annual equalization subsidy.
The Quebec government makes foolish fiscal choices all the time because it can. It doesn’t have to own up to its own poor judgment because it can count on Ottawa’s billions year after year.

Time to clean up Pride parade

Why are gay people allowed to hold a public parade showing what should be going on in the privacy of their bedroom? Is it really alright to prance about naked in the street wearing only a black leather thong and whip, leering suggestively with tongues licking lips at young children waving the Canadian flag?
If we heterosexuals held a parade, I can guarantee that there would be quite a few raised eyebrows when my float passed by, but out of respect to my fellow Canadians this “aspect” of our life was restricted to the bedroom.
Be gay, by all means, but the parade has passed all sense of respectability. It’s time to clean it up.

Haldimand Council votes to dismantle Caledonia blockade

It was a long time coming, but Haldimand Council has announced that it will finally do something to reclaim the Caledonia occupation site–the Douglas Creek Estates subdivision–where so many of us volunteered to be repeatedly arrested for ‘trespassing’ and/or ‘breaching the peace’ simply for trying to walk on the public county-owned roads through the site which have been blocked by native militants since 2006...

Cellphones Can I complain about technology here? Not my usual curmudgeonly bit about how machinery can’t save our souls, social media are stupid and electric light killed the night sky. I mean why are we surrounded by so much fancy stuff doing so little?
For instance, I’d sooner leave home without my wallet than my “cellphone” with 32 gigs of memory, lightning-fast processor and not just Plants vs. Zombies and Minesweeper but e-mail, Internet searches, my research files in the cloud and a terrific mapping app. Oh, and a 41 megapixel camera.
My Windows phone might attract ridicule from tattooed nonconformists all clutching a handful of trendy brands. But if I must have technology, give me this. And some apps from all those squaresville companies still thinking the Apple Store’s cutting edge. But I digress… slightly.
