Better care for seniors needed: McGuinty

Published: Wednesday, July 09, 2008TORONTO - Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty acknowledged yesterday the province had "more work to do" to care for seniors in nursing homes as opposition parties and unions slammed the government over conditions in long-term care facilities.
"I think we want the best for them and we've got to do a better job," Mr. McGuinty said after unions representing long-term care workers and nurses renewed demands for the province to provide more funding.
Representatives from the unions said their calls for a standard of three-and-a-half hours of hands-on daily care for residents is even more urgent following recent media reports that found more than 60 per cent of nursing homes have been cited for failing to meet some of the 400 standards the province requires to ensure the health and safety of residents.
