Abuse follows in poverty's wake
But now, women's organizations across Ontario feel they must deliver their own message: "It is imperative that the province understand and address the links between poverty and violence to build a sustainable and equitable strategy for the reduction of women's poverty in Ontario."
More than 50 women's agencies have banded together to write a poverty action plan with an explicit gender analysis.
Being poor holds special dangers for women, they point out. It traps them in abusive relationships. It exposes them to exploitation in the workplace. It stigmatizes them, grinds them down and strips them of choices.
