Explosive rope used to tie down load for customer

COURTENEY, B.C. — Police are trying to defuse what could be an explosive situation after a Vancouver Island store employee unknowingly used an explosive cord in tying down goods purchased by a customer.
On April 2, Comox Valley RCMP received a report that an unknown amount of pink “Lite Line” detonating cord passed through a second-hand store within the last four to six months. The store was unaware that the cord, which can easily be mistaken for pink or black rope, was explosive and used it to tie down the load for at least one customer.
The store cannot identify which customer drove away with the cord.
A small amount of a 1,000 foot roll was recovered and disposed of.
The cord is generally used to detonate commercial explosives, and police say that it may explode if exposed to fire or shock.
Police warn that anyone who believes they may have detonating cord should not touch or move it.
Courteney is located about 220 kilometres northwest of Victoria.
