National Post editorial board: Honesty and Michael Ignatieff

So did Michael Ignatieff really say: “We will have to raise taxes” in the future to pay for the debt incurred during the present recession? Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. The Waterloo Region Record, which was covering Mr. Ignatieff’s controversial statements at a Cambridge, Ont., Chamber of Commerce breakfast on Tuesday, says he did. There is probably not much point debating it, in light of the stern “clarification” he has issued since. Given the chance to collect his thoughts, Mr. Ignatieff said more or less the right things: We shouldn’t be sponging off our children under any circumstances, but while “an honest politician” may not be able to rule out tax increases, they must be a last resort for restoring fiscal balance.
But if he really wanted credit for honesty, Mr. Ignatieff would admit that politicians cannot and should not be trusted too far when they talk about taxes. History shows that when they promise tax cuts, they are often lying. When they say: “Well, maybe we’ll have to raise taxes just a little teeny tiny bit,” you can be reasonably confident those taxes will be raised, and probably beyond your wildest expectations. And when they promise not to tax income trusts … well, you know how that story ends.
