Adrian MacNair: Criminals don't make good immigrants

I just had the most absurd argument with a woman online about an article involving a young man from India who is facing deportation for a street racing conviction. After a lengthy trial last October, Ravi Badhwar, 23, was found guilty of criminal negligence causing death by street racing and failing to remain at the scene of the accident when he forced a truck driver off the road on Highway 400. That accident took the life of trucker David Virgoe.

Mr. Badhwar and two of his friends were speeding through heavy traffic at speeds up to 200 km/h, double the speed limit, laughing and gesturing at each other in their game. One of the cars struck the truck, which swerved to avoid other traffic, and crashed into a ditch. Mr. Virgoe’s actions are believed to have saved the lives of other drivers.

As well as failing to remain at the scene of the accident, Mr. Badhwar insisted he was innocent, and was only trying to keep up with his friends. He asked the judge for a break on his sentence.
