Editorial: Don’t cancel air show
September 08, 2010Every September, Torontonians can count on two major events to draw long lineups and induce rubbernecking: the CNE air show and the Toronto International Film Festival.
Both are major crowd-pleasers that raise Toronto’s profile sky-high — one on the big screen, another in the sky. However, while TIFF is revving up for tomorrow’s opening, the CNE air show faced two types of unexpected turbulence over the long weekend.
High winds forced cancellation of the first show on Saturday after choppy waters grounded a fleet of rescue boats. But the annual spectacle resumed on Sunday, culminating with Monday’s awe-inspiring performance that closed the CNE.
But there was turbulence from another quarter over the weekend, as a small group of protesters gathered in Trinity Bellwoods Park to rain on the air show’s parade: too noisy, too polluting, too traditional, they said.
To be sure, some people cover their ears when the noisiest jet fighters swoop down low over Lake Ontario. But it’s hard to find anyone who covers their eyes when any of the pilots perform aerial ballet high in the skies over Toronto.
Whether it’s the Snowbirds performing a pas de deux or stunt pilots diving in vintage planes, the air show never fails to take the breath away. Don’t let anyone take this festival of flight away from us.
