Toronto Is Still A Safe City IF.....

.....you develop a fortress mentality, curb where you travel, don't acknowledge strangers, don't use public transit, etc. We should ignore those that take umbrage at our place in the safe city listings and are trying to get us into the Top 10.

A 23-year-old man was rushed to hospital in critical condition yesterday after he was shot while sitting in his car with his young daughter at a plaza in the city's east end.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m., near Markham Rd. and Lawrence Ave. E., in the Terrace Brae Plaza near a Bank of Montreal, police said. Customers waiting in line at the bank ATM nearby heard a scream and several gunshots.

EMS officer Dave Viljak said the victim was struck in the left upper chest. "He's been taken to the trauma centre at Sunnybrook hospital," he said.

The plaza went into lockdown as investigators spoke with witnesses. Sgt. Kevin Murrell of 43 Division said he is hopeful they will help piece together what happened.

Murrell added that as of last night the victim was still clinging to life. "We don't know if he'll live or not," he said. "He's undergoing surgery."

A suspect described as 23 to 25 years old with dreadlocks was seen fleeing the bank in a burgundy or red van.

Toronto K9 unit nabs carjackers

Mar 21, 2008 06:55 AM

The Toronto police K9 unit made do without its dogs Friday morning, arresting two men after spotting a car wanted in a carjacking in the city’s north end.

Around 1 a.m., a young man and woman called police to say two men had approached them, stolen their wallet and purse, and taken off in the victims’ Honda CRV, Staff Sgt. Steve Tutchener said.

One of the carjackers was armed with a gun, police were told. The victims were left uninjured on Patricia Ave., south of Steeles Ave. near Yonge St.

Police began looking for the Honda CRV, but the K9 unit spotted it soon after on a nearby road and gave chase. The two men inside the car crashed it into a curb near the Silver City movie theatres at Yorkdale Mall, abandoned it and fled.

The K9 unit, already on scene, quickly tracked down two men. They were arrested and a gun was recovered.

“Luck was on our side tonight,” Tutchener said.

Police have not released names or charges.
