Councillor fights planned arena
Plans for a long-promised four-pad hockey arena in the waterfront area are moving ahead, but the latest proposal is already drawing criticism.“It’s stupid,” said Coun. Adam Vaughan, who blasted the $34 million plan to build the arena in a prime spot at the corner of Don Roadway and Commissioners Street, just south of the Keating Channel.
The project, dubbed a regional sports complex, has already faced repeated delays, with the city stepping in last fall to take over construction from Waterfront Toronto. And the clock is ticking now because $12.3 million earmarked for the project by the federal government disappears if it can’t be substantially completed by March 2011.
